For train enthusiasts that run the Western Railroads and have wide curves on the layout, the Big Boy is the ticket. Nothing like that ever ran on the Eastern Railroads and is not prototypical but even if I wanted to buy one, it can't run on my layout with all types of curves. Now we know why Lionel never attempted to manufacture a big boy articulated or mallet back in the day. All they had was O gauge 031 curves. Only Gargraves offered flex track and I guess if you add in Ross that's what people use today..

I bought it and most definitely will run it when I get it back from Lionel (sent there for repairs).

We go to the Museum of Transportation once or twice a year, and always take a long look at the Big Boy. As was stated above, it is deteriorating. When I moved to the St. Louis area in 1985, the Big Boy was in really bad shape. A few years later, it was 'refurbished' (looks-wise) and was an excellent display. But the weather has slowly but surely rendering it in poor condition again.
