A couple of weeks ago two Forum friends from New Orleans and Fairhope AL visited me here in the western NC mountains for a train show. They wanted to see the original Southern RR Spencer Shops Museum near Salisbury NC, about a 2 hour drive from here.  It's really a great place to visit and only $6 for seniors! Such a deal.

David (D-500) and George (FIXIT) and I had a great day of it. Weather was cool and overcast and there was hardly anyone else there at this massive facility the whole time - very unusual for a Friday! The huge shop building housed some nice exhibits including several classic cars including this Rolls 'Silver Ghost'. SR Crescent E8 that many of us have models of was a standout, all nice and shiny along with many other cars, trucks and a DC3 being restored.

A few steps outside into the Bob Julian Roundhouse for more interesting locomotives and rolling stock. A heavyweight observation car was decked out in finery as built for her original CEO owner and we had to view it from outside on the platform. An RPO car was open to walk thru as was a Army Hospital car.

Well worth a visit if you're ever in this area.

This scale model was built back in the 1930's and given to someone on the RR. Sorry I didn't take better notes. About 4 feet in length. It was an amazing model!

@C.Sam, this is a neat thread, I’m wondering if this is the train Museum near Salisbury, NC.? If so, hear some pictures I took last fall. It’s a great museum with lots of interesting trains and a huge turntable. I think the name is North Carolina Transportation Museum, we had a lot of fun visiting this hidden treasure. Pat, known as Harmonyards told me about this place. Happy Railroading Everyone BCBC808D-EEE1-4391-98FF-BD19CB36782BD621806F-383C-4E40-8C95-681593DDEF3262545057-E69C-4764-9BB9-9F2EA1B39694EDCFCC62-3C3F-42E6-A846-7F98E54E2F59CAF6D60B-A1AC-4FB1-AB5C-766A834D4B048AAB2ED8-E3BE-4009-8607-F358E7AA2657F2C0A200-32FD-4B21-84E8-FD56748B82AF71DED0B5-74AF-4FF6-B5B0-AFA601B4D82239924438-0F50-4EBB-8BF3-AE2FBD79238C2D3D0F66-FB8F-4279-9E0B-E140BADAD1061219CD74-3E57-4517-9020-B359A069A6EF83F1DC41-8848-4D22-B17A-DCC9A12DFFAB71C3AE01-7593-4367-AE8A-278CBDE3862C547D62E0-00FF-4F9F-9215-665BA86378A660FE5A14-4790-447B-9A28-B4BC90A73DCF18876BB5-4881-4573-829D-D7EA2B2F0E170A17BDB6-AB4E-430E-8D04-552FC33F31E3055AB48D-677E-440E-89D2-264D12DA298A4B27A2CF-B3CC-4FAE-8663-808701B789A9F1C08A07-31D0-4E6F-8512-6EBEF1812996E8DB7F33-FA85-4A5C-A13E-C739B8DEA325

Went to Spencer several years ago.  Great.  Lots of neat trains and old automobiles.  I especially enjoyed the round house and shops servicing the RH.  Learned a lot about RH and operation.  I spent several hours there. Not many places to see how the back shops of an old steam era RH operated.

After the visit I needed a name for my homemade water tower and I chose Spencer NC.  My turntable and round house are near by.

It's been around 20 years since I've been to Spencer Shops.  I've got family in Statesville, NC, not too far,  During a visit with my then young children,  we made the trip down to the museum.  Haven't been back since and the kids are now 27.  Now that Irene and I are in Myrtle Beach we're planning a trip to Statesville this spring.  A visit to the museum is definitely in order.  Pat if you've got any info on the open house maybe I can coordinate our visit and we can try to meet at the open house?

Joe the NCTM train here is scheduled for May 14 &15.  I normally have a table or two but not up to for this year. The show is now  inside the remodeled Backshop. Will go by to see some old friends only live about a mile& quarter away as the crow flies!

The show before COVID use tone pretty good!  Hope this one will get back to that status.
