Hello All !
I have a Lionel (I'm guessing here) 80's or 90's GP-7/9 (6-8567) in Wabash. I would like to make this engine non-powered to use with command control engines. Any thoughts?

Charly,
I am going to due the same thing with my original Lionel conventional Northern Pacific, I want to run my new Legacy NP & the old Conventional as a double header. I hope someone comes back with a good idea, on how to works this out for you, I will definitely be interested in their thoughts myself.

I removed the armature and power to the e-unit.
You need the motor to hold the truck on, but as stated, just remove the armature and brush plate. You can take the electronics out. If you want directional lighting, you could add the ERR dummy locomotive board.
No matter what you do, the motor truck is going to create drag. If you remove the drive gear and shaft, you will cut down on the drag a bit more than just removing the armature would do. But I think the magnetraction axles, and the drive gears that are right next to the geared wheel will still create some drag.
Maybe find a dummy GP from the same era and just switch the tops/cabs? If you're lucky you could find one that the cab was damaged and is inexpensive.
Jerry Williams supplied a square plate with his E-60 kits to make the unit 1 or 2 motors,it was drilled to accept a dummy truck...you might get lucky enough to find one...hope this helps...joe
To quote SPSF "I removed the armature and power to the e-unit" on this old custom-issue F-3 (painted decoration and lettering, not decals) that I found on Mr Bay. That's it.
You will have to take the motor apart - easy, a couple of screws - to remove the armature (because it has the worm gear, which meshes with the spur gear in the truck, on it), because the motor frame is part of the truck mounting design. Put "gutted" motor back together.
All is reversible (watch those thrust washers, ball bearings, and such).
The motor (frame) has to stay for that reason, assuming that the design is the same as my F-3. I'm not a PW guy, so I'm not sure about all motors.
Now a dummy; I left the roller pickups, as I recall (I also frame-mounted the pilot to stop the swinging, and replaced the original pilot with a proper one from Lionel's parts department - but that's another story):
I removed the motor/truck and install a plate on the inside of the frame and drilled a new hole for a dummy truck. You may have a add a small washer between the dummy truck and the new plate so the engine will ride level.
On this engine setup I removed the pullmor motor and truck and installed the plate over the large opening and installed a truck that had a can motor in the truck.
The powered front truck and the dummy rear truck both have center rail power pickups.
You could also remove the complete motor and worm assembly and use this to mount the truck. Easy swap.

Bill, does that really work with an AC motor? I think the mount is quite different.
Ok, great input, thanks for all the replies!
Got some more pix to post but will have to wait til I'm back at work to do so.
Hope ya'll hang with me til then

John,
It will work. I was surprised when you dual motored the Phantom that you didn't use can motors and install cruise.
Bill
Bill, it never occurred to me that the mount would fit or I would have considered it. I have a bunch of motors and mounts in my parts box, I might have found something that would fit.
Of course, there's also the worm gear, it has to match the existing truck. The gear on the AC motors appears to be different than the DC motors I have.

You will need to change the worm.
Bill
Bill, you just removed my desire to add cruise. Some of those are a PITA to get off, and I avoid changing gears if I don't absolutely have to. Is the shaft even the same size on the AC motor?
Ok, I pulled out the motor shot pix of both the motor and truck. As follows...
Also, here is another shot of the motor, and I'm wondering if it will seperate in between the two gray sections if I pull the screws out of the top.
Bill... do you have that item for sale, and if so, what is the price and what type of payment do you need? My understanding is that it is the same size as the mount on the motor I have?
Bill's adapter should fit the hole, and then you can keep the motor intact. You never know when you might need one.
Ok, I purchased one from the website.
Just a note to update that I got the part from Bill and it worked perfectly. Now my Lionel geep is uneducated and running behind the powered MTH geep. Happy pair, happy camper!
Glad we could help.
Bill
Yep! good thread with a conclusion.
Did you take the top plate off the truck and lift out the drive gear that connects with the wheel gears. This will reduce drag also...
