I just received my Autumn edition of "Streamliner", published by the UP historical society. They have a fascinating article on UP's water softener project. The author claims that UP was a pioneer in the field. The water was treated for the boilers of the steam locomotives. It has a chart showing locations, capacity and the year built. Drawings and great photos are included. I like the one showing remains in a 2009 photo, together with a photo of the towers in use back in the day at a descriptive town named Point of Rocks, Wyoming. This station was located somewhere between Red Desert Wyoming and Rock Springs. In general these were located system wide. There was a treatment tower located next to the water storage tank. Maybe someone will help me out and post some photos.
