The 765 is the first Nickle Plate engine to run on my railroad. I bought the 765 Berk as a dead body, but it's alive now.

Picked up yesterday from local toy train dealer.  A PRR N5B cabin (6-82629) ordered from previous catalog.  Sure do wish that it had the scale smoke jack pack with it especially since the instructions talk about how to replace it.  Well have to contact Lionel.

Being away, I obviously didn't do anything on the layout, but after talking to one of my friends, I did get an idea to maybe put in a small 2 track intermodal yard when I get back. I think this would add a nice aspect to the operations of the layout.

My wife said I have a bunch of boxes waiting for me when I get home, so I should have some nice engines to open when I get back!

A few pics from Newport, PA & Wabun, VA from the last 2 weeks. I was kind of bummed at the lack of Fall colors on the trees. I did find more color as I went towards Pittsburgh though.

Hallmark has been offering a really nice looking Lionel Christmas train set this season. Link to a an OGR post and photos;

I really like the Hallmark set colors overall look, features of the LionChief and the Chase gondola. But I did not really want to spend that much for a set.

 

I have a left over set (conventional 4-4-2) from a blow out sale a few years back new in the box unused and a couple of extra cars, a 1/4 of the cost of the Hallmark set.

 

Inspired by various Lionel Sets and the Hallmark/Lionel set, I set out to do a repaint into something that would suit me for a public display this will run at our railway museums Polar Express event with a # of other Christmas theme trains I have and eventually under the tree.

 

I used a few cans of Tamiya Silver Leaf paint over everything.

Then masked and sprayed with Metallic Red. Overall the color looks stunning in a bright light, much better then in the photos here, click on them for a larger view.

I went looking for some suitable stickers and loads for the flat cars. Was hoping to add some toy rocking horses somewhat to scale but cannot find anything, the presents will do for now. Found nice little wagons by Lemax and some sleighs.

 

I used the sparkly letters. I wanted them big enough to be able to see from a distance for this display train. Finished this painted and decal-ed over the last couple of days. Still trying to find the right Santa image sticker or photo to add to the side of the tender or box car. And perhaps some Snowflake or wreath stickers to the train in the empty spaces.

 

Had a little trouble fitting the lettering on the side for the space I had, tried to avoid the rivet strips where I could.

Added a little Santa figure to the back of the Caboose.

 

So excited to take it for a run tonight. Our little Santa loves it!

(darned the reverse unit quit after a bit of running, only goes to neutral and reverse no forward.) This set has the puffing smoke and air whistle. The Hallmark set with remote and sounds would have been nice but not for a show train.

 

 

Wish I could have made the Lionel sale...seeing those PE cars for $10 each makes me sick. We need to add to our fleet at our seasonal display.

Finally finished the scenery on my layout. Time to start thinking about some other projects.

Took a couple shots of my town of Spencer last night that are a little different.  The good thing that it does though is to motivate me to remove these blocks and finish them.  They need additional signage, parking meters and people on the streets and street lights yet.

Yesterday NY turns 70...today I turn 60!  Not a milestone I was looking forward to but, hey, it beats the alternative as they say.  But I'm so glad there's a hobby like this and a resource like this Forum to help keep that childhood magic and joy alive.  I love trains for a lot of reasons, but mainly because it keeps these feelings alive, and that's something you appreciate more and more with each passing year.  I get a kick out of looking at everyone's photos, and enjoy taking pictures of my own trains.  I hope you'll indulge me today as I post more than my share of Weekend Photos...just wanted to share some of my favorites from the past few years that have reminded me  of those  carefree days of our youth.  So without further ado...

Last week I turned 59.  We took our daughters and son-in-law out for supper.  When we were leaving our younger daughter told me that on my next birthday I will be OLD!  Ah, the perspective of a 22-year old!

Yellow Bonnett Santa Fe!!  My wife's maiden name was Bonnett! With 2 Ns and 2 Ts.  Maybe I can use that as an excuse to get one of those Santa Fe's!  

 

So here is my contribution.  I bought this at the Monroeville Greenberg show last weekend.  Atlas O Coil Car, Butler Works.  My Father-in-law and his father spent time working at Armco Butler Works.  That's the two Bonnetts.

I've got Yellowbonnet fever this week... my 3rd Rail SF Yellowbonnets came earlier in the week (well 2/3 of them, the second A unit is still en route)  Always enjoy your photos as well.  You were probably the one who got me turned on to the GM&O's more than anything else.

No kidding, Mark.  lol  Thank God we have our trains to keep us young at heart!

Here are some views of the scratch built barn I have been working on for the last month or so.  I just completed it. It is an architecturally accurate model of what is known as a "Pennsylvania Barn".  Key features are the forebay, roof with just two planes, and a stone foundation that will be built into a hillside. The barn has about 500 individually applied boards, all of which were stained using Hunterline stain.  The planks are nothing more than coffee stirrers....a box of 1000 costs all of $1.99.  The  silo is by Ertl, and I picked it up roughly 20 years ago with the plan to someday use it for a barn on my layout.  And now, that has finally become a reality!   It has been painted and weathered.

 

Note the close up of the lightning rods which is my favorite touch.  They were made of nothing but brass wire and craft beads which simulate  lightning rod balls.

 

The barn will sit at trackside awaiting completion of the three dimensional scenery which I anticipate will take a few months to complete...and if we are lucky, perhaps a little less. We shall see!

I'm intrigued by your elevated bump and go trolley line.

 

I've got an elevated loop of track now, and have had on previous layouts but have always had thing under the track supporting it in addition to columns. Granted I was running "real" trains with locomotives, not just trolleys but do you have any track flex issues when the trolley runs over it? Looks like you just screwed the track directly to the columns every few sections.

 

Despite my lack of room, I'd be tempted to try that on my layout now...I had an elevated trolley line built out of wood, with the track resting on roadbed and felt it looked cluttered but your system would fit a lot better with my crowded layout.

Neal nice work on the barn, should go good with your lay-out.
