I ran models of two F-series diesel locomotives on my 12’-by-8’ layout for this weekend.

Amtrak #102 was an EMD F7 Phase 1 locomotive. The model was made by Atlas O (30134002) in 2015 at MSRP $499.95 with TMCC and is pulling two Amtrak passenger cars by MTH. The real locomotive was Northern Pacific 6509A prior to becoming Amtrak #102 in 1972. It was built in November 1949 and retired in October 1975.

Metro-North #412 is a K-Line model (K2544-0412) delivered in 2000 at MSRP $309.95. I’ve been unable to find reliable information on the real #412.  I ran the model with two Metro-North 21-inch commuter coaches by Atlas O. Cars of this type ran in Connecticut as did Metro-North #413, which was painted in the same livery as seen here on #412.

Here are some photos from this past weekend's Greenberg show in Monroeville, PA:

One of us was running a battery-powered locomotive as a test on Saturday (it ran for 4 hours straight pulling a short train before quitting).

On Sunday at the show, planning for our Kennywood Holiday Lights was finalized:

And after tear-down at Monroeville, we went straight to Kennywood to off-load two trailer loads and several car loads (the first of many) and take our annual Kennywood group photo.

From San Francisco Bay to Humboldt Bay the scenic way.  It will be a 300 mile bicycle ride, but the former Northwestern Pacific right-of-way will become The Great Redwood Trail.  From the town of Willits north, the trail will follow the Eel River canyon—scenic but remote.  Landslides, collapsed tunnels, and abandoned rail cars need to be dealt with, but hikers, equestrians, cyclists, runners, wheelchair users, and others will see Northern California as few others see it.  Vineyards, oak woodlands, old growth redwood forests and the rugged, remote Eel River Canyon will one day be open to the public, but not yet.  Have a great weekend, everyone.

It’s now the late 40s on the Mohawk section of the New York Central. The time is the steam to diesel transition. A Hudson pulls a train of  mixed streamlined and heavyweight cars…….Two Geeps pull a mixed freight….

Oh, I get that comment all the time when I say I’m almost done and it’s easy to answer. I’m gonna clean up all the junk underneath the layout, get the room carpeted, build more train storage racks, and more than anything weather cars.

I miss not having a model railroad in progress with track, structures and scenery yet to be built - not to mention trains to be purchased. Photographing the trains and layouts for forum posts and magazine articles keeps me busy but it doesn't quite provide the satisfaction of constructing models or a layout.

Melgar,

Have you ever thought about a bit of reconstruction to satisfy that itch? The layouts are wonderful but if part of your joy is gone, why not change that? Especially when that's a part of the hobby you enjoy.  Seems like a great project you could work on with your "helpers" when they come visit. Not to mention maybe inspire another generation of modelers.
