Black Friday is behind us and it is full steam ahead for Christmas. It is time for the first Weekend Photo Fun in December.

Every year I set up trains to run around the Christmas Trees at my church , Parkway Wesleyan Church in Roanoke.

As I was setting up the track Wednesday I had several children watching.

This weekend the Virginia Museum of Transportation will have reduced admission, $5.00, and train rides (Candy Cane Express). That means Saturday and Sunday we will be running trains on the layout. Here are pictures from the kids level Christmas layout we put together this year at the VMT.

Good work on the kids layouts Scott and tks for starting each week.

New Wifi operation of trains looks interesting will be run to see how fast the younger kids learn these over the old guys. Would not be surprised to see a lot of grandpa's having the grand children set up and run the various new WiFi I pad / tablet setups. Perhaps may draw them to the trains and away from the video games.

Perhaps will have to see if some new games could come out of this that might challenge the kids!

From a club visit to Mark's last night;

Click on photos for a larger view.

Note the bridges are in the up position showing how they lift up to keep on a pressurized cylinder and are top hinged to clear the track as they lift works well.

The layout is on 2 levels of floor, lower part of basement a few steps down from upper basement;  so the track that runs at eye level and chest height in the lower room runs as large return loops under the upper part of the room for dogbone layout for the lower room tracks. You can see in the 5th photo the return loops for the lower basement run under the upper room tracks in this photo.

Scott,

It is really nice you set up trains at your church.  The children seem to be quite interested.  They are our future in the church.

Question:  What does KC&NW stand for on the little 2-8-0 under the tree?  Kansas City & North Western jumps out at me.  Tell me it is for something else.

The Christmas area at the VMT is great.  I hope to make some progress on my Christmas layout this weekend so I will have something to post on this thread.  My friendly neighborhood man in the brown uniform delivered the rest of my Fastrack yesterday.

Most of the details have been added to the office window layout. Lots of folks from all over have been stopping in..

Also, our club is having our Annual Christmas Open House this weekend BOTH days from 1p- 4p here in town. Anyone in the area is welcome!

Our office is one of the nicest buildings on Main Street with a two story lobby, 7 Crystal chandeliers, and a double wooden stairway to the upper floors. Was an old Bank originally. Great place to work from.

It is that time of year when trains begin appearing under the Christmas tree.  Here is a photo along with the story sent to me by my daughter just yesterday.  I was very touch by what she had written.  Bo

"A train around the Christmas tree has been a must since I was a little girl growing up with a dad who loved trains and still does to this day. He has a model railroad that fills their downstairs that just keeps growing and becoming more of a story. He actually just made the front cover of a national train magazine that just came out on stands two days ago. This train set was gifted to my boys from my dad. Isaac has to of course have a little action figure playing on the tracks while the train is coming." - Susie

Milwaukee Road Hiawatha has just left Chicago's Union Station and enters the stone arch bridge that is under construction across the Mississippi River.

The Hiawatha is on loan from forum member AlanRail.  He felt it needs a longer mainline to stretch it's legs and I was happy to oblige.  Besides I had some travelers that had been waiting for a long time to get from Chicago to Milwaukee.

It was a shortline in West Virginia. My grandfather worked for the Kelley's Creek & Northwest Railroad as a young man.
None of the engines around the trees work. I leave those there for decoration until I bring the ones in to run on Sunday. The KC&NW doesn't have a motor in it. The kids attend to abuse the train around the tree while no one is there.

Scott,

Well I was close on the NW part.

I have heard of Kelley's Creek having lived in West Virginia for a while, and having great interest in the Mountain State and it's railroads.

Yes, I suppose the kids just can't resist messing with the trains.  None of us big kids are able to resist it either.

Thank you so much for the reply!!

Like the Viaduct. Built one like that for my son when he was 5. ran a loop of track around it up off the floor. That was awhile ago, he is now 28 years old!!
