Weekend Photo Fun 2/26/21-??

Photo and videos show my MTH Premier Long Island Rail Road G5s 4-6-0 #21 steam engine (20-3068-1) with a train of K-Line “Dashing Dan” passenger cars. I purchased this PS2 model in 2002 and it has been running on my 12’-by-8’ layout (with a BCR) ever since. It threw a traction tire just after I took these videos, so I removed the shell, replaced the tire, cleaned the wheels, and tested it. The G5s was developed by the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1923 for commuter runs in the Pittsburgh region. The LIRR, a PRR subsidiary, received 31 G5s engines between 1924 and 1929. They remained in service on Long Island until 1955.

I built a smallish 7'x8' temp layout for several reasons:

1. Bored silly by not going anywhere but inside my house and the gym.

2. I have so much beautiful Easter, Halloween, and Christmas layout scenery stuff, way more than I could ever put on my Christmas layout (even tho' it's 14'x11'), so I thought it would be nice to see it all out and not hidden away in storage.  So I started with an Easter-themed one.   Since scenery, and not trains themselves, was the motivator, the layout has just 2 simple circles

3. I'll leave it up for a while, a week or 2, and then move on to the next Holiday that I feel like doing.

I will share closeups over the next few weeks but want to spread them out since there's not many to show.

MTH........probably acquired around 2013-14......here it is pulling the "Fresh Fish Express":

It's a beast......it can pull my 40 car army train or my 35 car juice train effortlessly.....

@Putnam Division - I take it you will be getting the Army Turbine from Lionel?  That's good to know about the number of units they can pull.  I have 3 MTH CSX ES44DC's (should have been 4 but oh well) to pull 20 Lionel Husky Stack cars and 2 MTH CSX SD80MAC's (should have been 3) to pull (I've lost count) MTH Husky Stack cars.  A

Maybe not.......though they are really cool, my trains funds are being diverted to turning the attic into a 20x30 train room and a 10x30 store room.  Then the layout enlarges......then, more track and benchwork......

However, I do have these beauties to "MU" for long trains:

I love the green/gray NY Central passenger cars in Peter's above video. I'm on the hunt for them, except mine would need to run on 031 curves, and Peter's passenger cars look like they may require wider radius curves than 031.

I believe the color and style of these NY Central cars would match those that ran on The Put in the 1930s through mid-1950s.

My goal is for my model railroad to evolve over time by adding features of The Put.

I think the style of Peter's passenger cars is Heavy Weights, maybe Madison. Does anybody know if that is correct?

I have 3 publications about The Put that include photos of passenger cars that ran on that railroad, but all the photos are black and white. As a result, I'm not 100% sure of the color, but my best guess is they would be the same shade of green as Peter's passenger cars. Do you agree?

Arnold......when I play "Put", I use the shorter Atlas gray/green heavyweights .... pulled by a 10 Wheeler, and RS unit or a Geep.....they are running on the inner loop......in one of the videos, they are stationary.

Do you know if the Atlas passenger cars in the above ed video can run on 031 track?

When I've checked checked out Atlas passenger cars before, they usually require 042 track.

Mine are packed away in the storage unit.......but I pass it most days.....this week, I'll get a few out and try it.........I am almost certain that MTH ones are O31. That's another option for good looking small heavyweights.

Received some of the MTH wannabe SD70ACUs in CP Heritage and Military colors.    Andy and Rich spoke from the Covid-19 Bunker a few months back that MTH couldn't justify new tooling or retooling of the SD90MAC rebuild with SD70ACe cab to make the ACU, so they went with the SD70ACe body.  Even so, these are beautiful models.  The D-Day 6644 is due in next week.  Imperials in Purple Boxes.  ;-)

I agree, Peter, that MTH Railking Heavyweights  are usually good for 031 curves, but I have not as lso seen it with that shade of green for NY Central.

I have a feeling that this combination:  NY Central plus Heavyweights, plus that green shade plus 031, is going to be hard to find. That will be a fun thing to try to hunt down on the Internet and later on at train shows. Arnold

Arnold this is a pair of pullman green MTH NYC heavyweights pick up a while back to run with a P&LE "Steel King" passenger consist.  That now will double with the NYC 4-6-6T.

The interesting thing, these two cars were/are packaged in two individual pristine MTH passenger car boxes but with no end labels identifying the content(s).

Peter's Atlas NY Central, and Ron's MTH NY Central, heavyweight passenger cars in Pullman green, shown in their above posts are excellent models for passenger cars on The Put, but I'm 95% certain that they require at least 042 curves.

The video below shows MTH Railking NY Central cars that I already have that run on 031 curves. You will see that they are gray, not Pullman green:

Those cars in the above video are being pulled by a smooth, quiet running K Line Hudson NY Central steamer. I run quiet locomotives early in morning and late at night when my wife is asleep. Later on, I will post a video of my Ten wheeler with sounds pulling these passenger cars.

The photos in the 3 books I have about The Put show that their passenger trains often consisted of a ten wheeler pulling 2 heavyweight NY Central passenger cars.
