A non-train fiend sent this to me today with a possible explanation.

"I believe this is a photo of the CB&Q during the Mississippi River floods around 1953.  If memory serves me, the Q had almost completed its conversion to diesel power when the floods occurred.  Naturally running diesels through water this deep would have shorted out and destroyed the traction motors.  So the Q pulled its best steamers off the dead line awaiting scrapping to power trains."

The " LCCA Switching Track Traveling Boxcar" traveled to Columbus OH this weekend on Feb.7, 2015 for the WGHOT Show.  Here are some photos of this traveling boxcar with LCCA members along with LCCA president Dennis DeVito.  Several members had their photo taken with this boxcar on the LCCA's Mini Layout which was designed and built by TW Design of Dallas TX.  Thank you to all of our LCCA members and guest for stopping by the LCCA display.

marker......after a thorough watching and closely paying attention to minute detail...... i did detect a train surfing through that snow whirlwind (lol)

that is one of the finest "train in snow videos" I have ever seen

much thx

It's also the best one I've seen.  After buried, plowing through the snow, blasting through the intersection blind with snow on the windshields.  He came tearing through that intersection after probably having the throttle wide open going through the snow.  WOW!

I would love to know what was going through the engineer's head.

I'd also like to know if any engineers have a different interpretation of what might have been going on in the cab.

I got another scale loco this week. I am slowly replacing my traditional size favorites with scale versions. My latest is a NYC Dreyfuss Hudson. I'd been keeping an eye out for a Williams Dreyfuss as I run conventional. When I saw this one I knew it was different than most Williams Dreyfuss but didn't know why. After I got it I found via folks here, it was a super detailed edition from Williams....some claimed it was a clone of the Lionel Smithsonian edition of the Dreyfuss w/o TMCC. Looking up photos of the Lionel I say if it's not 'extra' Lionel Smithsonian Dreyfuss it's VERY close!!! Happy to land this one...

And on a side note.......I have post my travel log from my 6300 mile trip via Amtrak at the link below www.currtail.com. Hundreds of photos too.......

Ever want to run a Amtrak train on the layout with a BNSF freight loco.....We did....read about it!

We left 10 hours late because the diesel fuel had jelled and potable water froze on our Southwest Chief.  They thought they had the fuel issue cured......but the lead unit failed just outside KS and the BNSF unit was brought in. Between 12 hours late now and a BNSF unit up front.....LOTS of railfan photogs out along our route. Got to see Cajon pass.....the SWC when on time always goes through in the dark....not this trip!

That makes perfect sense. I used to take the I-215 to the I-10 before they got the CA-210 extension finished and I think I saw the westbound Chief two or three times. Always thought it came through at night based on the normal Los Angeles departure schedule.

I always like to photograph things before they go.  This a pretty rare engine.  I don't know that I've ever seen one for sale.  I just took mine out of the box after at least 6 years.  I've never had the whole thing out of the box.  I think I took a look at the tender when I bought it.  Lionel really did a nice job on this engine.

When talks about middle class railroading, this is it.  This Mogul and a couple of Wabash diesels bought over time and you could have a great layout with some nice equipment.

After having to work yesterday, Weekend Photo fun was especially great today with our trip to Patterson, NJ to see the Hi-Railers Public Open House. I'll have more photos to post of this unbelievable layout later in the week, but here's John S. giving the tour to my friends  Gino and Mike. Gino is just starting a layout, and was happy to find some cars for sale to complement what he has.  Thanks, John, Ben, and all the others who made the day so great!

More to follow later in the week, and look for a Weekend Movie as well.

This week we took the completed wireless video caboose to the club (AGHR) - it's the silver caboose at the front of the train in the blurry picture.  Alexa wanted to mix it up and see where the train was going vs. where it had been.

I also completed modifications to my rotary snowplow (added a "spiral" for visual interest, added LED headlight, and slowed the blade speed per another thread with the idea).

The " LCCA Switching Track Traveling Boxcar" traveled to Columbus OH this weekend on Feb.7-8, 2015 for the WGHOT Show.  Here are some photos of this traveling boxcar with LIonel team members, J. Don Reece, Lauren Morris and Meegan Untereker aboard the WGHOT Thomas The Tank Train Ride.  We had a ball taking a ride aboard Thomas before the show started on Sunday.  It was both a thrill tide and a surfing adventure!  It was a great fun weekend!

You bet, Mike!  Had the temp. in the garage up to 68 degrees yesterday afternoon. Almost warm enough for just a t-shirt.   It's been quite mild here lately with lots of rain.  Got to run a few trains with my almost 2 year old grandson.  Stay warm.

So Chris, where did you grow up.  My son enjoys your photos too, and is a regular poster of NS railfanning videos.  I'll put him in touch with you.

Neal,

I grew up in NJ & would take regular trips to Harrisburg as a kid w/ my Pop ( he was from Harrisburg). I also went to college in PA so I was able to get some good time trackside

After much back & forth, I really wasn't feeling this current setup, so I pulled it down during the week. Decided that the postwar display layout worked best for the space & it really had 'something' that made it special, so in a twist of irony, I am using my own CTT article to rebuild it pretty much exactly how it was. This should be fun - never had to compete w/ myself, lol. I must say, my wife was very understanding. This gives me a chance to correct some issues I had w/ the original one Live & learn

My goal - get back to this -

Chris,

Every week I look forward to seeing your layout. Love it. Thanks for sharing it with us.

Thank you! Can't wait till I get the postwar version back up. I did a lot of work on it over the weekend  Stay tuned...

Not the best quality, a little rushed trying to avoid, and avoid getting hit by, the other trains that were running.

Dave

Dave,

Thanks for posting!  Are these your engines.  They had some nice steam running too!
