The Hostlers have taken Erie-Built diesel unit 90B out to turn it on the wye. They are stopped between signals at R C Junction, waiting for the Second District Local to slip into Caprock and tie up for the day. The big Fairbanks-Morse passenger unit will go out on No.94 this afternoon. Yesterday, it arrived at Caprock on No.93, with a broken steam pipe and was swapped for GP7 2651, so that the train could continue to Brownwood without significant delay. The roundhouse crew had the 90B repaired before midnight and — once the hostlers get her pointed westward, she’ll race over to Clovis on No.94, and be coupled into an A-B-A consist with the 90L and 90A, which will be swapped with steam engine 2915, on No.3.  Tomorrow, she’ll be basking in the sun at the Barstow Diesel Shop for monthly inspection and a good bath inside and out.

I don’t recall how long it was after that last run, that 4877 was put on display in South Jersey. The PBS in NJ created a segment of the display and celebration. They called it Big Red. I lived in Brooklyn at the time and couldn’t tune it in; but a friend in Staten Island saw it and contacted the station. He somehow wrangled 6 copies of the video from them. My little guy watched it over and over. At the time I had the 25 TCA Anniversary set. A Williams GG1 and passenger cars. I wanted a Pennsylvania GG1 so I decided to have it repainted. I was taking it to YORK and my son helped me decide that it should be Big Red. Elliott Welz was a well known painter that had a table at YORK. He did a super nice job on it.
