The weekend is here and it maybe a wash out but you can always spend time running trains or on WEEKEND PHOTO FUN!!

It's a big weekend at the Virginia Museum of Transportation.  The "J" will be fired up, the crew will be there to answer questions and to allow visitors to blow the whistle. There will be bus tours of the Shaffer's Crossing and the East End Shops. I will be at the O-Gauge layout running trains.

This  hangs on my wall in my office next to my desk. It was made by a former patient of mine named Steve in 1990. Steve passed about 25 years ago and would be about 108 if alive today.

He was career Army and served in WWII and Korea. During an office visit long ago in the late 80s, he asked me my date-of-birth and the date of my Med School graduation. Those are the numbers on the passenger cars. The tender has my initials.

I am posting this today because I was looking at the picture earlier this week and really am humbled by Steve's efforts. I'm sure he can read this and I want him to know how much I treasure his gift!

I see that my son Steven posted an image of the Conrail covered hopper that he just finished weathering.  Just to show you how far this kid will go to get things right, check out the following.  Last week I posted this photo of our model of the curved stone arch bridge carrying the ex-PRR Middle Division over Tuscarora Creek at Port Royal:

So, last weekend, following the posting of the above photo, we took a trip out to the Middle Division.  Wanting to be absolutely certain that the old man modeled everything correctly, Steven jumped in a rented kayak, and paddled across the Juniata River, and up the mouth of Tuscarora Creek to check things out.  Don't believe me?  See for yourself...

Just amazing what this kid will do to make sure I didn't screw anything up!

Williams Challenger. Custom decals by Rail Graphics. Pardon the so-so photo (I didn't take it! Really!)

Not mine, but a friend's, painted (airbrushed) and lettered by another friend (who usually builds/paints structures and airplane models - and some On30 trains, lately - and this was his first venture into disassembling/painting/re-assembling a brass locomotive).

I'm going to sneak into his house and paint those shiny wheels black.

You are fortunate and blessed!

I couldn't wait any longer. I put down a temporary loop of track and ran trains. I had a blast!

I still remember what I read 40 years ago.  "Get the trains running no matter what.  If you don't, you will lose interest."

That's why I set up two "simple" loops on my platform.  I need to run even if the layout never gets finished.

No toy train pics this week but I did have the Operation and Awareness Response (OAR) Hazmat Training train on the job at Alexandria, VA. I thought you may enjoy a few photos of a training session with fire departments from Northern Virginia. The train is now complete with the engine, 2 boxcars, 4 tank cars (DOT 111A, 112, 115 and the newest 117 type tankers), and the 2 flatcars that were recently added used to get hands on with the most common types of valves and fittings found on top of tank cars.
