British Hornby started to make smaller gauge trains just before the war. The locomotives were more to scale then their 0 gauge trains, but the rolling stock were looking like smaller version of the 0 gauge cars. Here are two early postwar lithographed 00 gauge LNER coaches that I bought last week:

And here with the matching locomotive:

Nice shots, Chris. I didnt make it down for this one. How was the show? Did anything go home with you?

John

The show was a little sparse and Some tables were even empty! I think the back to back storms may have had something to do with it. A lot of people still didn’t have power. Nothing came home with me this time.

American Flyer Set #2  1926

As the catalog states "  "American Flyer mechanical trains are the ones that have made our name nationally famous."

Catalog Illustration

1926_Catalog_2

These sets came with a clockwork #10 engine and a baggage and coach sporting various lithographic treatments.  Some of the lithography was the usual American Flyer litho for the period with nothing more than an "American Flyer" on the headboard.  Others sported the names of real railroads.  The #2 set below has both the coach and the baggage with Pennsylvania markings.  The lithography simulates steel sided construction.

I  bought a MTH Ives Red and Black 3236 around six years ago. I procrastinated on the matching passenger set for a month.  When I was ready to buy I couldn’t find one anywhere.  The 10-5083 set was on my saved search list on eBay for a long time. It finally appeared last week as a “buy it now” item and I snatched it.  I really like the 180 series cars.

Gentlemen,

Great Tin everybody, Chris's show stuff was sweet!  Loved the Tin layout.

PD,

Please tell me what AF Engine and Tender you have pictured, I will need to pick one up for the rolling stock I just received.  Real nice looking engine & Tender you have there.

Greg,

The AF Orange and Silver (Tan) Train is serious stuff!  Love it.

Fred,

Your Hornby Train is simply fantastic, the engine is incredible and the cars are over the top!

Butler,

The old 120 Pa set is magnificent Tin Plate!

Steamer,

Dave Restore that AF Caboose, they are fantastic old Tin!   Mine just arrived yesterday in the mail from out west.  Nice old Red AF lighted Caboose and an old Aqua and Orange Box Car, with Latch Couplers.   Both in pretty darn good shape for how old they are.   I actually got them to Couple to my Lionel 817 Caboose and they are running on the over head layout right now, in the Train Room.  I want to work on a real nice Transition coupler in the near future.  Funny thing about these particular AF Cars, the have no ident numbers on them any place, not even stamped in the Tin.  Can you tell me what the AF Ident numbers really are?  Further the Box Car is pretty darn heavy for an O Gauge Car.  Both run down the FasTrack nicely however.  Now I will have to start looking for a  seriously nice AF Engine and Tender, I actually think these old AF Latch couplers are kind of cool!

Some British HORNBY freight car from 1925-30 with advertising, less shiny than the new MTH ones or your wonderful homemade cars but they have a specific appeal for many collectors.

This last one is a model from HORTON, based on a common boxed car a covered with an overlay of a specific paper to look as litho for Colman's Mustard.

Also picked up the red Winner series 1811 and 1812 pass cars from this mislabeled Lionel set with a Marx CV heading it.

Will display these with the traditional Ives green 1811s and 1812s and Lionel orange 1011s and 1811s as well as the cream and red Lionel 1811 I picked up a few weeks ago.  I think I have got most of the variations now.

Steve,

Where did you get that American Flyer Steam Engine & Tender, what is it's exact name and number, and where the heck can I purchase one?  Would run that baby via HHRC thru the TR mode of my DCS, it would be so cool!

Steamer,

Dave I can't help you with the parts, in reality this is one of the reasons I had no AF Trains for a heck of a long time, even my buddy Frank did not carry a lot of the AF Parts at the Iron Horse Hobby Shop.

The engine is a 1680 “Hudson” and a 1620 tender from 1936-37. The cars are three 1621G coaches and a 1622G observation. Hudson is a bit of misnomer due to lack of a couple of wheels in the front. It’s really a 2-6-4 but Flyer called it a Hudson.  The passenger cars and some gorgeous Flyer freights of the same era will be on my sellers table Sunday.

Sometimes you see a good one on ebay.  Otherwise you may find one at your local train shows.  They can cause a bidding frenzy though.  There are several variations and two different styles of tender.

Port Lines can be an issue once in a while. They set up at York and some other shows, so they may be away. No body beats Jeff for near instant service.

There's variations on the variations. Remember, it's American Flyer.

There's also the 1681 engine.

Steve,

Do you know of any place I can purchase a (AF 1936-37), 1680 Hudson & 1620 Tender like yours?  Nicest AF Engine & Tender I have ever seen anywhere.

PCRR/Dave

Dave, as others said, shows and e-bay usually. Can get pricey. I sold one set last year and this one is going to be for sale this weekend, along with the passenger cars and some gorgeous freights.  Out locals are not big tinplate lovers so my lot this weekend may come home with me. Only about five or six of the club are serious tinplaters. But if your looking for a Red Comet, Blue Streak, Two tone green City of Denver with 2 extra coaches, A Flying Yankee with 2 extra coaches, red and blue Franks Roudhouse 1700 Std Gauge coaches. Stop by my table. Couldn't be more than a few thousand mile drive. See both the early and late Flyer Hudson's double heading below.

The earlier 1680 engines only had a single axel on the rear truck to help the engine navigate tight turns. The truck still looked like a four wheel truck for cosmetics.

You will also find different color cab windows, and the front headlight cover could be brass or black.

PCRR/Dave,

The 1680 is a beautiful engine.

The hudson has difficulty with smaller radius track.  It runs on the Flyer 40" 4 rail whistle track.  If you want to spend less you might consider some of the other engines in the 3300 series.

Or these.

And if you want it to look like you have some real steam power try a double or triple header of the smaller Flyer engines.

Prewar Flyer I think.  Looks clean too.  I was watching that lot if you got it off ebay. You got a good deal I think.

Not enough rails for prewar Flyer.

They are ho 2 rail
