I am building a Nascar short track on my Layout. I found a few 1/48 Nascar tribute cars in an auction.  All are from the same supplier.  Some metal body, some plastic body.   The plastic body  Hudson Hornet had something rattling around.  I took it apart and found a big nut inside.

Then I noticed it looked like it was designed to hold the nut.  I opened up one of the other, heavier,  plastic cars and sure enough, it is intentional.

I find it weird that a designer added extra cost for something like this.  I know NASCAR has a minimum wieght, I didn't think it applied to toy models.

Pretty sure Joe is right. Unless you plan to print a batch of moonshine jugs for the trunk and actually fill them, you’ll need some weight, especially if you build Bristol.  We found that out the hard way when we all abused my cousin’s slot cars. The effect is even worse than an underweight real car on a short track.
Every once in a while I wonder how long it took most of us to quit running everything at full throttle. Real cars and trains would have been generating sonic booms!
