Local prices in southeast Ohio are around $25 for 1/2'' 4 x 8 sheet. Is this about the average price ?

$19 here in Troy, NY
$26 in Pittsbugh at the Depot.
Just in case, you may want to consider "Quietbrace"....it costs around $7-$9 per sheet.

How does Quietbrace compare to Homasote? Is it the same type of material or more like celotex fiberous? I will have to drive 1 hour to get to a Menards that handle it. No one local carries it or can even get it!
Frank
Quietbrace and celotex are basically the same. Home Depot has one and Lowes the other. Average price is about $10 in So Cal. Homosote has been as high as 40. Very difficult to find, so I tried the celotex about 5 years ago. It has been working out well. It is supported with 3/4 inch plywood. No problems, but the humidity is very low. Homosote is structurally superior, more dense, can support some weight, and handles humidity very well. I used to live by the ocean and moisture was a concern for my ho layout. The specs on homosote said that it would hold up to moisture very well, so I left a 3'x4' section out in the weather for a year. The piece did not warp and did not swell from all the rain. I first purchased the homosote in the late 1980s. When I moved to the desert, 15 years later, I salvaged the homosote to start building my o gauge layout. If humidity is not an issue, save yourself a lot of cash. Good Luck,
Bob
How many of you have actually visited the Homasote web site? It lists retail suppliers around the country. Some outlets may be using a different name for the specific product you're seeking, as these days "Homasote" seems to refer more to a company rather than a specific product of that company.
If all else fails, try contacting the manufacturer and asking for assistance. I have a feeling that they would be interested in knowing that there is a market for their products that is being frustrated by the realities mentioned in this thread.

Paying $18 from local lumber yard in Boston.
My local HD doesn't carry hoasote anymore and well... even if they did I wouldn't buy any HD lumber products. Local yard has better lumber, better prices and free delivery.
I called Quietbrace and asked for a sample to compare with Homasote. Seems that you should be a contractor to receive this but the lady said they may go ahead and send it. $8 a sheet at Menards, 1 hr drive each way so I might load up the truck and head out after I receive my sample. I don't understand why Homasote is that expensive, it's pressed newspaper!

Frank,
Your post prompted me to put some actual numbers on QuietBrace characteristiscs.

I used Homasote for many years, but due to its lack of availability where I now live, I switched to QuietBrace, and I am very happy with it.
Good luck with your layout!

$40 per sheet in in NW Florida, and I have to travel 100 miles to get it.
Jan
That is crazy Jan. I thought my $26 per sheet was high. It is interesting how the availability and price varies from region to region for Homasote and QB.
About $26 a sheet as well here in Illinois....crazy...must have gold in it or something...
Generic sound board does the same thing at a fraction of the cost.
