The single sheathed auto car is not a SP car if it has wood siding and dreadnaught ends.   SP used A-50-.  The "A" stands for automobile car.

My car is almost identical to the UP car pictured above (Thanks Erik) but mine has a different PSC number.  Mine is PSC #15561.  Mine has a vertical brake staff not an Ajax brake.  Mine looks very much like an SP A-50-6 as pictured on the Protocraft website.  Hopefully, this car's identity has been solved.  Is this correct, Gene?

 

I have another car, a 50' double door, automobile boxcar with end opening doors, outside braced but with steel sheathing instead of wood.  It's PSC number is 15745.  Thus far, I have not found the prototype for this car.  Any ideas?

 

Erik, do you know the PSC number for the Northern Pacific car pictured above?

Well I'll be darned.  I have a model of that car, but thought they forgot the scribing.  Also assumed that skirt was ATSF.  I shall go back and look at it again.

Thanks for the research and photo.  There is one difference between the picture and my car.  The side sill support on mine is not as long as the one in the photo.  On my car, the side sill support goes only about a foot or so beyond the doors.  Norm, at Protocraft, sent me pictures of an A-50-11 in the as built version and a later version when the end doors had been removed.  Without the end doors, the side sill supports are shorter than in your photo and in the original version of the A-50-11.  Could my car be an A-50-10, one in between the other two cars?

This is probably your PSC car type.  Ignore the bogus paint scheme.  Someone decided that the whitewashed builders shot was appropriate for the car.

It is my car if it has end opening doors on the end we can't see.  Is the car number correct?  My car is PSC #15745.

No, this class and model has a standard three sheet Dreadnaught end on the A end.

Did the SP A-50-11 have the end opening doors?  Did the SP A-50-9 have a side sill strengthening member the same length as in your photo?  I think we are zeroing in on this model.

The A-50-9 and A-50-10 had end doors.  The -10 had a short fishbelly while the -9 had a very long.

Have you ever seen decals for those cars Gene?  I know Norm has them for the A-50-6 cars but not the -9/10 cars.

RL Design makes a specific set that covers the -9 through the -11.
