I bought 3 NOS Railking Hudsons at York that are PS-1. My understanding is that the battery should be replaced and charged before using the engines. I found some 250mah and some 600mah 9 volt batteries on line. Would either of these be acceptable in the PS-1 engines?

Yes.
The 250mah batteries are probably a more realistically rated battery, I wouldn't pay more for the 900, which sounds overly optimistic for a 9 volt form factor battery, and it may actually not charge well in the loco either.
You should use nickle metal hydride batteries. Rechargeable 9 volt batteries come in 7.2 and 8.4 volts. You may have to read the label closely, but you want the 8.4 volt types.
As batteries corrode and will lose charge over time, potentially harming your engine if powered up without a battery change, a battery replacement is a better bet. J and W Electronics offers the original, safe BCR (Battery Component Replacement ) at a reasonable price. Replacement is easy: pull your old battery, plug in the 9 volt BCR, and place on the track powered to at least 10 volts. Let the engine sit for 1 minute, and you're ready to run. BCR's last a lifetime, so you don't have to worry about "frying "your board if you don't run the engine for years or having to pull the shell to check / change batteries. Happy railroading!!
150 to 180ma is sufficient. Anything above is gravy. Now, I have run into a few no name batteries that seem to have too high a no load voltage rating and they do not allow the engine to come out of reset. So use a reputable battery if you go that route. G
