Here's the thread with your fish stories from York. Right before heading home I came across a Russian Set in Blue Hall. It was the Stalin version in great condition and was priced for only $850.00. I paid $1350.00 for my set and it wasn't anywhere near the condition that the one in Blue Hall was. I could have bought that one taken the best pieces between the two and auctioned the poorer examples on Ebay and made a profit. However York money was nearly all gone...maybe it will be there in October.

     So what didn't you buy?

These items (copied from where I had them in my "what did you get" post)

 

Here's the "Almosts" (some regrets, some not - noted as such)

  1. The METCA convention table had one full set of 5 Madison  Hardware boxcars available when I stopped by on Friday.  If you bought all 5, you saved $5 on each one($70 per car) , even the first issue that was not available as separate sale anymore.  I considered this for maybe 5-10 minutes, but another buyer expressed interest and got the set.  I think for me, I made the right choice in declining as I wasn't totally in love with all of the others boxcars, even though it would have had a "neat" factor to have the full set of 5.  While I paid a bit for the one car, it was less than 1/3 of what I would have spent on the set of 5.  No regret on this outcome(aside from maybe that it may have altered my short term thinking for #2 below).
  2. The METCA table also has some neat box vans for various NY establishments.  One was Entenmann's bakeries, which has had a series of Long Island related club cars made over the last 5-6 years or so.  (I suspect this was the van Brian mentioned picking up? - Brian?). I passed on this when I was there considering the 5 cars mentioned above, maybe I just mentally stepped back to reflect for a bit after the my 5 Madison HW car decision.  I should have bought one of these vans, because when I went back today the Entenmann's ones were gone.  I'm the one who always tells other the rule of "buy it when you see it", but I goofed here.  Not the end of the world, by any means, but I do regret not getting one, especially since these were really affordable at only $20.
  3. I saw some MTH WVP&P log cars on a member table.  I already have a full set of these, but I tend to like running long log trains with their respective engines, so I considered buying a few more.  It was a bit of a mixed bag in terms of the item/road numbers, but they were priced well at only $25 a piece.  Some one else thought so too , because when I went back this morning, the seller told me it was his first sale of the morning, someone offered him $80 for the 4 which was an even better deal.  I'll call this one a minor regret.  (though missing out on these might have caused me to make the final decision to go back and pursue the Madison HW car since I did not spend money on the log cars)  I really didn't need more of the log cars to make a set, so I hope the person who did get them enjoys them.

 

Also, while I was not in serious search mode for it, I had briefly considered a Lionel N&W Pocahontas set if I saw one.  I saw a few early in the meet through probably mid day Friday, but I decided against it (and all the ones I saw were also gone by Saturday morning).

I was looking for a Railking Imperial Evolution Hybrid and was hoping for a caboose/engine package deal but that wasn't to be. 

 

There was an engine in the blue hall but it was priced above list price, had no warranty, and the seller would not negotiate as it was "so rare, impossible to find, and in really high demand". Yea...nope. I'll maybe order one out of the current catalog! 

 

I don't really feel like there is much these days I'm really attracted to. I DO really want a 44t. I was really impressed with the WBB version that I saw running and on display. I was sorely tempted but want the MTH version for command control, electrocouplers and cruise control and I'd probably regret not waiting in the long run. 

Charles Ro had an MTH 1940 NYC Dreyfuss with PT tender for 850 bucks. I think its the best looking one thats been made by anyone so far but with three already on the roster I decided to pass. There were a few other killer deals on NYC steam as well but those too were already in hand. 

In the end I went home with two Pacemaker boxcars and some detail and repair parts.

 I was looking for the same diesel!  I actually saw one on Friday morning in the orange hall and didn't buy it.  When I went back to buy it the diesel had sold.    I saw the one you mentioned in the blue hall as well.   Odd that he didn't come down in price.  I've been able to negotiate with him in the past.  By the time I got to his table I was over budget so I didn't even ask. 

In the White Hall :  a 3854 PW Merchandise car for $375. I saw it at the end of the day on Thursday, and figured I'd go back Friday morning. Gone of course. I'm still kicking myself.

Orange Hall :  a brand new Bascule Bridge, tested once, all original packing material, for $170. Finished the aisle, by the time I made my way back (being a good boy and following the arrows) it was gone too.

Two things I saw that I thought were pretty neat: The baseball team figures at Scenic Express, and a woman in the Blue Hall was selling handmade brass holders that held a string of approx. 6 ads on old matchbook covers. You would see something like this on a station platform, or next to a station. They were only $30., and well worth it. The only drawback was that the scale was closer to Standard Gauge. I have almost zero space left on my small layouts, but I don't want to build a larger one.

I assume you are asking this hypothetically?  How would anyone here know if people were selling stolen stuff?

I expected to see this item at most vendors in the Orange Hall... However I did not.  I thought it was a more common item.  I saw it for $45 in the Purple hall on Friday morning... by afternoon it was gone.

 

Then I saw it at a vendor in the Brown Hall.  One was marked $50 and one was marked $49.  I offered $40, thinking she might counter with $45 and I would buy it.  She replied,  "That $49 sticker on the box is wrong... it's $50".  I walked away. 

 

Oh well... maybe next time... Allentown First Frost is not that far off.

The one chain yanker I saw was a Standard Gauge McKeen car, with trailer, from that

low production maker.  I think it was priced well into four figures, but my interest was

in the fact it exists, as do several versions  in HO, not that I am interested in Std. Gauge.  With a Mack railbus in G scale and multiples in HO, I don't think there is one of those in Std. Gauge, though.  I think I missed the G scale Mack usually running in the Orange Hall, if it was there, so didn't get to grit my teeth enviously as I walkd by.

Michael - it's so incredibly easy to hook up - you should take the plunge. 

 

I passed up up a set of MTH Premier L&N hoppers I could have really used behind my L&N GPs and during the feeding frenzy at Vince's I got scooped on a set of the MTH Premier B&M F's in the blue and white scatter pattern. 

--A third pair of the Lionel 86-foot boxcars. I saw the Grand Trunk versions at Nicolas Smith, but wanted to take another look around and found the Conrail and NS 2-packs at Gryzbowski's. Had I went back for the GT pack, it would have had to ride home in my lap, as the trunk was full.

 

--One of the MTH Premier Superliners, the transition sleeper that the builders forgot to use the lower-level end, leaving it with high-level end-doors on both ends. I considered it as an addition to my Auto-Train, but concluded that with 12 extra Superliners (MTH, K-Line and Lionel) in my collection already not being used in that train, I didn't need any more and wanted more autoracks before adding additional sleepers.

My wife joined me this trip but stayed away from the Fairgrounds except to drop me off.  She is, or rather was, a big fan of funnel cakes.  Since January she has sworn off refined sugar and lost a lot of weight.  I am thrilled for her, and perhaps a bit jealous as I lost only a tiny bit in the same timeframe.  And I haven't even had any Scrapple lately.
