I have been running my big boy solo, but it's time to add some cars and cabose. I don't want just and cars, but I would like to add period cars.
Thanks

Most any 40 to 50 foot car, especially wood sided. 2 and 3 dome tank cars.
NOT an Extended Vision Caboose, tho that's what came in the set I bought my first Big Boy in.
I Avoid Hicubes, Autoracks, containers and such, way too modern.
I run anything behind my BB. I did buy the PFE scale reefers to go behind it so that most of the time it'll pull that unit train, but It's also been pressed into pulling anything from passenger cars to Marx tin plate.
Either a string of steel-sided PFE reefers or a string of UP yellow stock cars. Not sure how prototypically correct either are but they look sweet in tow.

Thanks for the link!!! I did do a search before posting this thread.....
The plan is to eventually get a set of UP passenger cars for excursions, but given the Challenger's history, I'll probably just hang modern freight cars behind it when it arrives in December.
You're suppose to say "anything I like".
From this website:
"A little known fact is that 4000’s were cleared for operation between Ogden and Los Angeles but no records indicate they ever made the trip and as a result they were not used for any regular scheduled service west of Ogden. East of Cheyenne there was also no regular scheduled service except for an occasional trip to Denver pulling troop trains and into Nebraska during the blizzard of 1949 and coal strike of 1950. The original intent of the Big Boy design was for the pulling of freight in the 35-45 mph range even though they were designed for a maximum of 80 mph. On occasion they were used for passenger service but passenger service was better served by the Challenger series."
I'll be pulling primarily box cars, reefers (anxiously waiting for the PFE reefers), and coal cars. I guess no troop cars, though.

I have a string of up to 25 scale PFE reefers (a mix Lionel, MTH, Atlas: they al lplay well together), and a scale UP caboose I run. Makes for a nice train. Looks good.
I pull a 12 car coal drag or the black passenger cars that it came with.

Black passenger cars????
Ya, MTH had a Big Boy with Black and dark Grey passenger cars as a set. I'll look up the number here in a minute.

Oh, you mean two-tone gray, i.e. dark gray and light gray. UP certainly did not have any "black passenger cars".

Steep? That comes out to only $50 per by my calculator. Sounds like a heck of a deal, in my opinion. Try asking him for free shipping.

The msrp was 269, I like what Lee said, up mixing it up with different brands (manufactor) of cars, it will look like a real railroad then

Check it out quick to make sure all is well.
