I have been using a technique which essentially gives me a Permalink.  I use the Firefox browser and have a convenient "Mail To"  button on the browser. Click on it and you mail the page / discussion to yourself or anyone else.  You can even set it up to automatically go to a folder.  Once a discussion has ended I will often edit it down to the essential comments using a program called Print Edit WE and save as a PDF.    j

A permalink sets the focus to a specific response where as the topic URL focuses at the top. An example would be where a topic question has 30 answers, and the 25th response has the really well thought out answer and is very correct. A time later, someone else asks the same or similar question needing the same answer. Instead of pointing them to the topic and having to go to the 3rd page to find the answer, a permalink to the specific 25th desired response can be used instead.

Jim, a permalink is the exact URL for a specific post, not the more general topic page. The forum has an important use for them, when people put "likes" on posts, it forms a permalink in your alert list. When you click on the topic that the person liked, it returns you to the exact post they liked. I use this feature from time to time when I want to be able to direct the conversation back to something from the past that is relevant. You grab that permalink, and create a link via text, or just raw, in a new post.
