OK boys and girls, what will be in the new catalog?

If I had to guess... I would say some very expensive toys that will appeal to a small percentage of the male (and even smaller percantage of the female) population of the United States.  Which has been true since MTH issued its first catalogue over 25 years ago.

And, shortly after this catalog is made public it will trigger a S#@%-storm on this very forum.  Don't like this, should have made that, do we really need another blah, blah blah.

Some folks will be pleased, but too many will find something to gripe about.

Then Lionel will issue its new catalog and the fun will start all over again.

Yeah!!

Wished they had been at the York G scale show with some of the new samples at least. They showed them on their face book page and then removed them?

I'm hoping someone will make the most modern type reefers soon. I may have to make my own.

A few months a salesperson from a local train store mention that MTH would be adding whistle steam??   They have certainly fallen behind Lionel as far as features are concerned so this may be a possibility.  Would also like to see cylinder valve smoke as a feature on ALL of their Premier steam engines

A app that would work in harmony with their DCS system to be able to use your Apple or Android phone to run trains???

I've been impressed with their set offerings of beautiful Premier steamers...e.g., C&O Allegheny...with a string of cars + 'boose at a knock-out pricing.

Soooooo......  Here's a special set idea....not cheap, but destined to be iconic, maybe?...from the 2014 newsreels....

A set commemorating the move of Big Boy 4014 from LA to Cheyenne:

A powered, P.S. 3.0  UP SD40-2 #3105 (or SD-70M 4014 or 4884)

A non-powered  (except for lights, perhaps) free-rolling UP #4014 Big Boy with functional couplers fore & aft

An insulated boxcar UP #453665

A UPP Caboose #453665

....!!

And, when you're tired of running the set in a commemorative fashion, that non-powered #4014 Big Boy will be the pride of any Man Cave shelf....the most regal of all "Shelf Queens", IMHO, of course!

And, 'down the road'....after the restoration and a couple of fan trips that will produce enough adrenaline in the populace to renew the American Spirit ()....MTH will release a powered roller display base for the 4014 of this set, complete with speakers through which one can play any one of a zillion CD's that will have recorded the adrenaline-pumping sounds of this beast...the exhaust, the whistle, the bell,....the thunder!...as it rolls in all its glory!!!

Well, you asked.....

What I'd like to see is that MTH replace the cast in front coupler from much of the Railking Steam line-up with an option for the user to add a knuckle or kadee to run multiple units.

I've almost given up on the possibility of an updated/upgraded doodlebug, Polar Express Lionel Corp. Tinplate, and a mid-size (Imperial level) GG-1 that would look good pulling the 15" (60 foot) passenger cars.

As a post edit I'll add the following:

  1. I'd like to see someone, anyone come up with a bluetooth feature that would permit car/engine/trackside sounds to be sent to remotely placed bluetooth ready speakers that are in and around the layout.
  2. IIRC, MTH never came through on its promise to bring products or features that utilized their Coors Light refer car technology.  After all these years, I would guess that there are newer and cheaper technologies available to accomplish the same functions as the original Coors set features.

It generally depends on how the VP’s view the status of the economy and O scale hobby sales.

Don’t expect much like new tooling boxcars, roads or subs. I hope I’m wrong this time but they usually show a complacent and conservative path. Generally it’s more of the same cookies in an already flooded market.

My interest is in only Premier “true O” rolling stock and whatever old style diesels or subways emerge. So that would equate to around 2 or 3 catalog pages of the entire PDF.

I’m still waiting on overdue LIRR RS-1 & PRR RS-27 items from last year. Where are they?

MTH has always seemed to come out with different niche products. It seems that they study what Lionel is doing and then try to fill the spots that Lionel doesn't have products to fit.

In the last few years Lionel has been broadening their line, the most significant innovation being the LionChief plus control system. If I were MTH I would come out with a parallel stand alone remote control system but make it backwards compatible with LionChief+. My prediction is that MTHChief will come out in a year or so as I see the stand alone remote operation taking over the market. When I purchase a television, DVD player, or even an A/C unit one remote control unit offers broad customer appeal, simplistic operation and does it all. This mode of operation and an economical retail price, is where I see the model train market migrating towards.

I would love to see this little beauty  Its a Hoboken Shore 44 tonner.  Funny story about this engine.  If you watch the movie On The Waterfront with Marlon Brando and KArl Malden there is a scene that KArl Malden is talking to Marlon Brando's girlfriend in the park.   You hear a steam whistle and a steam engine starting to chug and then poof what crosses the screen  The Hoboken Shore 44 tonner  If MTH made this I would change the sound file to a steam engine

That would be pretty cool Ben!

With nothing new predicted, this would be the perfect time for both MTH and Lionel to enter the highly lucrative Staten Island market with Premier/Vision Line scale versions of Staten Island Railway (SIRT-OA) R-44s and Brookville BL20Gs:

2010-sirr-01-300

Something old and something new; something borrowed and something blue! The R-44s are now unique to SIR and they're considered to be antique; SIR is their last stand. The BL20Gs are "new" - no one has modeled them, yet.

To All: Sorry, I couldn't resist adding this flight of fantasy in an attempt to brighten what appears to be a grim but entirely realistic prospect.
