What is on my workbench these days...?

 

It has been awhile since I have had time to do any model railroading. I am still gathering equipment for my Union Pacific late 40's very early 50's "L.A. Limited, Pony Express" or "Pacific Limited"

 

This car was imported by PSC in 1991 and makes an excellent stand-in for a modernized "Challenger"chair car used on many of these trains just prior to the Yellow and Grey era. Not a dead on candidate but very close. Thanks to Fred Hill and Coach Yard gathering color samples is so nice. Coach Olive is a strange animal on a car; unlike the black with a whisper of green Pullman green its bright and not subdued. The Espee used a few different shades of Olive from light to a dark. UP like the Espee was in the same pool on equipment and shared. Painted trucks to match the body is a fun twist on these cars. Still as in any project in O scale; decals are a tough match. I would have had them printed but felt that the Microscale alternative was pretty good; they look fine.

 

I am still in the phases of completion, weathering and full interior to come!

Hey- that is an awfully cool idea. Thanks for the offer- Decals are a hassle sadly; or everything I want is too weird and no manufacturer thought it was worthwhile to make decals.
 
I scanned the color off a Coach Yard piece imported in 2004 or 2005. I use automotive paints, bake them. Sprayed with a small paint gun; an Iwata HP BE2 or BE1 depends on the size of the job.  
 
I bought the gun about 18 years ago. Coast Airbrush still offers them I think special order as they are only made in Japan. Good equipment.

I have not done any models in the modern era; are they still called modern?

after looking at your car I've got some work to do. super details how did you handle the vestibule doors and what kind of glazing in windows is it tinted? yes its a crestline kit bought junk off ebay really rusty batch of 8 cars nothing the walnut shells couldn't peel off. would really love to see more pics of your car. gotta learn from everywhere. cause its the chance of a lifetime in a lifetime of chance.

Terry - you are way ahead of me - I do not do interiors.  I do put window shades in - in this case green ribbon, attached with packing tape.  I might do tinted glass, but I find it difficult to find tinted clear plastic sheets of any real thickness.

 

i prefer the modern Walthers kits for all my passenger cars.  My main criteria is straight sides without nail holes - they are coated with high gloss Scale Coat, and attached with contact cement.  If I do lights, they are generally sealed in there, and when they burn out, that is it.  But I am using K- Line streamlites, and have never had one burn out.

 

The secret on the roof is lacquer- based sanding sealer.  The vestibules are simply cut with shears - the doors do not work.

current update photos of 2 P70 coaches on da bench. does anybody no where to get a heavyweight monitor roof in basswood ? I cant finish my 28 seat 1 drawingroom car cause the original roof is warped, tried soaking and clamping to a flat surface but no love. these are all cars I've hustled to finish cause the weather breaks and were off to pour 150 concrete windmill bases by the time the snow flies next fall  laid on me arse all winter spring now back to 90 100 hr weeks its a living

thank you mwb, just solved my pesky warped roof and ordered a new one great resource thanks again.  ogaugenut mostof my cars are reshopped, I buy junk ones and rebuild them. my last great score was a year ago in Jan managed to get 8 super old cars the ones with the one piece milled center rib and folded metal vestibule steps I think these were Vintage Crestline cars most 19" to 20'' long some one please correct me but did Crestline sell to Walthers? I also try to buy vintage kits in boxes seems Walthers changed factory locations several times based on addresses on different boxes I'm almost finished with all 8 and while building them have been hunting interior parts  for next winters builds mostly all virgin kits  bunch of old Pullmans. All of these last 8 were built by some one who had access to Patapsco and

Big river Railroad used office materials as all interior partitions were made from daily car movement logs dated roughly 1943. I build the concrete base that supports wind mills and summer is close so I try to do 1 car a summer and this year gonna give Joe Fischers laminated Bristol board sides a shot  to build a Union League Club 6 section buffet solarium lounge car definitely got my work cut out for me. havent built models for a while but someday hope to be as good as  some of the cats on this site. sure a learning curve hard to find parts or suppliers  but I'm willing so I will learn

I just got home.  I truly am sorry. your cars are the stuff so I posted here I'm sorry our tastes are not the same I wanted knowledge. Did not mean to drift. Sorry Erik your post had the stuff I wanted to emulate albeit different road. I was interested in technic and supply of parts.
