There's been a tremendous amount of great info posted here on this thread about cleaning track and it's been very useful. However, I'm not seeing the point of going through that process on our 50 or 60 year old childhood track. Do we honestly believe that the "cleaned" track will work as well as new tubular track? If you're talking about setting up a small oval (like maybe 7 feet across or so), it would cost you around 30 bucks for new o27 with 2x 36 inch straights on each side and curves larger than 27 inches. That's a pittance compared to what you end up spending in this hobby for engines or most anything else. There's always the "barn find" where people find old track that is in mint condition. But that's not the case with most decades old track. Tinkering is a major part of this hobby (and for me, the best part). But the end result should be something that is an improvement. To use that old track for anything other than a test track (especially a permanent layout) doesn't seem to be worth the trouble to me. But.....to each his own....that's the nature of our hobby.
