I picked this up many years ago amongst a collection of S gauge trains, I haven’t seen it in any catalogues so I guess it may be something to do with Erector stuff?
it has a light bulb inside and the bent clear plastic piece rotates 360 degrees and the bit it is attached to moves 180 degrees in the casing. It is marked Gilbert on the end and underneath it says IL-1 Illuminator. What did it illuminate or is it used like an inspection lamp for awkward places?

I have never seen one of those and have no idea what its use was. My best guess (do not confuse this with a good guess) is it was used for the locomotive headlight in the #150 Diorama Display.
Could it have been used for a Gilbert microscope to light up slides
