Ride the Duquesne Incline...
I second that. My family visited several years ago when I was younger and I'd definitely love to go back for another visit. Plenty of places around the city to see real trains running as well.
The incline's are also a neat ride too.
Hokie 71,
Grab a bite to eat at the old P&LE Railroad Station and see the rest of the small mall that goes with it.

And say..."what are Youns doing tonight" ...instead of "what are you guys doing tonight "
If the weather is nice, check out the main through West Park.
Ride the T.
Pennsylvania Trolley Museum isn't that far away if you have wheels (the T doesn't go that far south, although the intermodals used to.)
Someone else on here observed that the upper deck west side seats in PNC Park have a great track view (and you get the river, too.)
There's almost too much to see.
We rode the incline tram up to Mt. Washington? and visited the historic church Sat. afternoon for Mass, breathtaking views we thought. I am an old fashioned Map person, so that helped.
do you want train stores ??
One of the hidden sites is Penn Station, still the Amtrak Station downtown.
Bridges, Bridges, Bridges, I've been told more bridges than any other city in the US.
Great double deck RR bridge across the Allegheny River.
Main line NS, also used by the AVR. (Allegheny Valley Railroad)
Close to the Pittsburgh International Airport is the Montour Trail, one of my favorite get lost destinations.
I also recommend the Carnegie Science Center, Miniature Railroad and Village. Always an effort to display models of Pittsburgh regional sites.
Enjoy your stay in Pittsburgh

I'm 100% in agreement with Mike CT with ALL of the above.
Love that Montour Trail, what even cooler is that its a Rails to Trails
You can do this from your laptop.
Watch the eagles and eaglets at Pix Controller
As an alternative to trains and meetings--are the Pirates or Pens home for games?
What a great Walk-off Opening Day win yesterday.
I'll second that!
And you might be able to find one of these...
... (sku #30-78139) if you are passing by any of the shops listed on that item's "Find It" page.
As mentioned above, the Carnegie Science Center is a must!

Get a Primanti Brother's sandwich and wash it down with a pop (or better yet, an Iron City).
Oh Boy! There is too much to do in Pittsburgh... great ideas above...
Have you seen this place?
Western Pennsylvania Model Railroad Museum:
And you have to check out the Elmsworth Locks!
And maybe catch a game at the Igloo down town... many things to do downtown!
Check out the Fort and the park downtown...
And maybe you want to check out one of the last hidden treasures a Bessemer Lake Erie 2-10-4... rusting away in McKeesport Port Rocks industrial area... no. 643..
A real crying shame...hope somebody saves it.

Sorry J Daddy the Igloo is gone. There is a new sports arena, where the Penguins play and a giant parking lot where the Civic Arena uses to be.

Jdaddy,
Catching a game at the Igloo is an April Fool's joke, right?
Bill

J Daddy, this may be a little difficult, as this area is now just a huge parking lot!

One of my favorite movies filmed there: Sudden Death with Jean Claude Van Damme...
Oh man I am getting old....

Try the Carnegie Museum--world class dinosaurs are on display and also the Natural History exhibit is great. The Phipps Botanical Gardens are also worth a viewing. I am not sure if their outdoor layout is running now or not.

hokie 71,
If your meeting is on the east side of Pittsburgh, stop by the Pitcarin RR Yard now the largest RR Yard in the world, it runs for 25 miles along Turtle Creek thru Wilmerding, Pitcarin and Turtle Creek, some times there is some way cool engines lash ups that you can only see in the Pitcarin Yard, with all kinds freight cars to see. Visit the Union Railroad Round House close up, also on the back road to Monroeville.

Rivers of Steel National Heritage Area

As I recall from that earlier thread about that locomotive, I believe you meant “McKees Rocks” rather than McKeesport Rocks. Not sure there is a place named “McKeesport Rocks”. Despite their similar names McKees Rocks is a borough NW of downtown Pittsburgh while McKeesport is a city SE of downtown. They were each named for a different man with the last name of McKee.
HTH,
Bill
Bill, I think you are correct. I found it assuming J Daddy meant McKees Rocks. It is here:
101 Munson Ave
Mckees Rocks, PA 15136
It took me a while, but obviously found it

Thanks Bill, Yes McKees Rocks.
Yep, Mike that's the engine. My grandmothers house was just on the other side of the McKees Rocks Bridge. Use to visit her in the summer.

Yes Hokie71, I would forget the meetings. There's a lot to do. No one mentioned the Heinz History Center. http://www.heinzhistorycenter.org/historyCenter.aspx/ I see a picture of an old PCC car on the front page. It's handy to the Penn Station and Primanti's restaurant already mentioned.
If weather permits, rent a bike and check the Great Allegheny Passage, that's everything that is railroads - past, present, and future.
Cheers!
I would also consider Heinz Historical Center www.heinzhistorycenter.org This is in the city and contains a rich history of Southwestern PA.
Don't forget boat rides up and down the three rivers, assuming the ice is gone and boats are running.
Good suggestions as wife and I will be in Pittsburgh for the LOTS convention (Lionel Operating Train Society) early July, and chance to visit whats left of my inlaws and friends. Who knows maybe cross paths with some forum members there.
Well lets see. You can stand on a corner & watch all the girls go bye. OH sorry, you guys are to young for that song.
