Interesting.  I have never heard the original in a good recording (just on some videos), but I think he newly-released MTH Premier model got it right, or is at least trying.  It has the deepest whistle of any model loco I have ever heard.  Very much like a big, deep riverboat - almost ocean liner deep.

Absolutely! That was done deliberately, as one of the crew was in the tool car watching it on TV, and every time one of those idiots tried to talk, he would radio the man on duty in the cab to blow the whistle. Worked out quit well, didn't it?

Hi Jack, was this same whistle used on both Early and Late Challengers?

As I am sure you are aware the term "3900 Class" can be a bit confusing, with the early challengers originally being numbered in the 3900 series, then being renumbered to the 3800 series when the Jableman(Late) Challengers came out.

Then to add to the confusion, UP, would renumber, either Early or Late Challengers to the 3700 series, if/when converted to Oil Firing. The Late Challengers are my Favorite locomotive, but UP sure did their Darnedest, to make their numbering a "Challenge" , when discussing these locomotives.

Not to my knowledge. I've told by many of the "UP Old Heads" that only the "big three" locomotives carried that "UP Special" Hancock deep 3-chime.

Try listening to the Lionel Legacy model of UP #844, which came out some years ago. That model has the absolute best reproduction of the 844 whistle I've ever heard come out of a model locomotive.
That video always makes me chuckle

I loved that! What surprised me is that neither Olberman or Matthews lost their temper over it, which would have been icing on the cake.

I went down this past Nov 2014 to the Youngstown Whistle Blow. Well I did get video. At the 7:04 mark in the top first video, I is the same whistle Hancock 3 Chime. Also there are 2 other favorites in this video I like. Which whistles do you like in Part 1 and 2 in these videos below? Also for an added bonus, that's me blowing that whistle in the second video Part 2 at the 14:10 mark.
