I just bought an Sd-40 tmcc model made in. 1999. This is my first modern train. Why is one of the wheels on the middle axle on each truck squared off? Only on one side front and back trucks. What's the reasoning? Or did I just buy a screwed up engine. I can't find where to post this so here I post. Also can't figure out how to start a new thread with this topic. Thanks Jeff

Jeff, I think I get the question. In situations with 3 axles or more,  a wheel set (usually center) will often not have flanges on the wheels. These are known as "blind" wheel sets. And can be found on locos and rolling stock both. There because flanges either aren't needed, or to allow easier passage around tighter curves because the axle spread length along with gauging width would not fit through small curves otherwise. You could post that question as a stand alone thread just about anywhere because the real prototypical equipment uses blind wheels sometimes too.

If it's wheels rubbed flat, as in bump bump bump if it spins, you've got issues to look at.

Top right of every page is a "post" button. Select it, then choose a topic section via small arrow to right of white box (hi rail would work) etc, etc.. If it's totally in the wrong spot, it will get moved to a better spot;, no big deal.

On an Android, you might need lots more guidance. Send an email to me & I'll try to help. (Click my name, then again to see my profile, it's listed there (I actually send from another address right now, but it will still be obvious it's me).    I hope that helped.

Those are blind, but that is an odd set too. I don't see a function issue.Does it look ok when railed?

I'd guess that wheel type needed to clear something . If not on that loco, on another using the same wheel type.

If you wish to send your modern Linda Carters to me I'll gladly pay for shipping.....I'll take care of the handling too thanks.

I'm not blind

It's tough for me to pick which of these is my most satisfying purchase this year.

I picked up this LionChief Plus Erie Camelback from Charles Ro at the Amherst show in January

and this Railking NYC Aerotrain from Trainland at York in April.

Both are a lot of fun.

Joe,

I have always wanted a Aerotrain. So neat. Thanks for sharing. Something else to look for.

I was lucky enough to buy a good number of trains this year...but for me 3 purchases stick out because of not what they are but where they came from...The estate of lifelong model railroader Donald Callahan.

Mr Callahan passed away on January 1st,2016 at the age of 87 and was a model railroader for over 80 plus years ! Through childhood, college, marriage, raising a family and a career and then well into retirement Donald Callahan never took a break from the hobby.

As a long time customer of such stores as Madison Hardware and The Hazlet Train Stop he amassed a truly wonderful collection that gave him pleasure right up until his last day !

You can read his story in the Derek Thomas book "The Madison Hardware Story" (chapter 3) as told by his son and my good friend Robert (Bob) Callahan.

Bob gave me the great opportunity to purchase many items from his dads collection and I have been forever grateful !!!
