For me the Lion Chief Patriot U36B and Lion Chief Plus E33 PRR Rectifier Electric have been the most satisfactory. Both have exceeded my expectations in operation and appearance.
Would have to be the Domino and PRR single dome tank cars I purchased from Gryzboski's in Moosic Pa. Got a good deal and wonderful service.
I tried to buy Wonder Woman....but the 1978 version was no longer available.
So, I'll have to then say my best train purchase was a Legacy Great Northern Heavy Mikado in Glacier Paint Scheme from a fellow Forum Member. Works perfect. Looks terrific.

Getting things back on topic....
I was on the fence originally about the new Allegheny that was just released. Really glad I decided to go for one, beautifully detailed and a really smooth runner.
Jhagewood posted:I just bought an Sd-40 tmcc model made in. 1999. This is my first modern train. Why is one of the wheels on the middle axle on each truck squared off? Only on one side front and back trucks. What's the reasoning? Or did I just buy a screwed up engine. I can't find where to post this so here I post. Also can't figure out how to start a new thread with this topic. Thanks Jeff
Jeff, I think I get the question. In situations with 3 axles or more, a wheel set (usually center) will often not have flanges on the wheels. These are known as "blind" wheel sets. And can be found on locos and rolling stock both. There because flanges either aren't needed, or to allow easier passage around tighter curves because the axle spread length along with gauging width would not fit through small curves otherwise. You could post that question as a stand alone thread just about anywhere because the real prototypical equipment uses blind wheels sometimes too.
If it's wheels rubbed flat, as in bump bump bump if it spins, you've got issues to look at.
Top right of every page is a "post" button. Select it, then choose a topic section via small arrow to right of white box (hi rail would work) etc, etc.. If it's totally in the wrong spot, it will get moved to a better spot;, no big deal.
On an Android, you might need lots more guidance. Send an email to me & I'll try to help. (Click my name, then again to see my profile, it's listed there (I actually send from another address right now, but it will still be obvious it's me). I hope that helped.
Those are blind, but that is an odd set too. I don't see a function issue.Does it look ok when railed?
I'd guess that wheel type needed to clear something . If not on that loco, on another using the same wheel type.
If you wish to send your modern Linda Carters to me I'll gladly pay for shipping.....I'll take care of the handling too thanks.
I'm not blind

For me it was a 1957 Lionel Sears set # 9643 I got it from a friend along with many accessories and a # 53 Rio grand snow plow for $250.00. He just said I want you to have it because I know you love trains and I don't care less. So I agreed to his price. I had no idea when I got it what I had.
A great find for me.

Well, there are a couple that were particularly satisfying. Forum member Frank Swafford easily separated me from some train slush fund money in exchange for some very nice Atlas 5161 ADM covered hoppers. I also took delivery of a pair of 3d Rail SD9's (which I need to set up for Kadees).
I didn't buy much this year but I sure nailed it with nice additions. After searching for the last 10 years I found a set of MTH Milwaukee Road Boxcabs (black version). To top that off I also picked up a 3rd Rail SD7, Milwaukee Road of course.
It's tough for me to pick which of these is my most satisfying purchase this year.
I picked up this LionChief Plus Erie Camelback from Charles Ro at the Amherst show in January
and this Railking NYC Aerotrain from Trainland at York in April.
Both are a lot of fun.

Purchasing a brand new Lionel Legacy S2. It was a steal. The engine is so awesome.
I was lucky enough to buy a good number of trains this year...but for me 3 purchases stick out because of not what they are but where they came from...The estate of lifelong model railroader Donald Callahan.
Mr Callahan passed away on January 1st,2016 at the age of 87 and was a model railroader for over 80 plus years ! Through childhood, college, marriage, raising a family and a career and then well into retirement Donald Callahan never took a break from the hobby.
As a long time customer of such stores as Madison Hardware and The Hazlet Train Stop he amassed a truly wonderful collection that gave him pleasure right up until his last day !
You can read his story in the Derek Thomas book "The Madison Hardware Story" (chapter 3) as told by his son and my good friend Robert (Bob) Callahan.
Bob gave me the great opportunity to purchase many items from his dads collection and I have been forever grateful !!!

It a fun train with great sound. The passenger announcements add a lot to the set. The short passenger cars handle my O36 curves with ease. I just looked and Trainworld.com still has them in stock.
