chris ,I know they used to have conversion kits for that,,maybe eby or a parts dealer would have them,,myself ,I love link couplers!!!!!!!!!
Hi Terry. Nothing wrong with link couplers but the rolling stock I have are all knuckle type so it makes more sense for me to convert the tender.
Chris
Port Lines sells the coupler and mounting pin. I've done a bunch of them.

Chris,
This is just a thought, you may end up with more engines or cars with the links, why not do one or two link cars as transition cars, link on one end, knuckle on the other.
I have a few that I have done, also have a couple of cars with knuckle on one end and Kadee on the other.

You must remove the tender from the loco and remove the shell before you try anything. You will need the pin removal tool (the tube), or similar tool such as a small socket from the garage tool box. The process requires a bit of dexterity. You have to hold the flat head of the coupler pin over the tube or socket. While holding this into position you need to drive the pin out with a small ball peen hammer. 90% of the time it will not come out the first or second try and the pin will bend. You also risk bending the coupler tab, and will most likely destroy the link coupler in the process. If your lucky the pin will pop out, but don't count on it. Alternatively, you can gently cut the pin as close as possible to the coupler tab with a Dremel then grab the head on the other side with a pliers and twist it out.
You 'll then need to reform the coupler tab into shape. You'll need a replacement knuckle coupler with split shank, and a split rivet. You slide the coupler onto the tab and align the indent on the bottom with the hole in the tab. Insert the split rivet and spread the ends.
Many times these conversions are less than perfect. As someone suggested, it's easier to buy a cheap link gondola and swap one truck out with a knuckle one thus preserving your link loco.

Thanks for all the great advise guy's. I'm not a seasoned S gauge guy but this has all been very helpful. Thanks Gandy. I'll remember the right term now for the "Pin removal tool" "I knew there had to be a better term for it" When all else fails I always have my Dremel handy!
I suggest getting a later vintage tender that has a knuckle coupler. Then just trade out tenders when you need to pull cars with knuckle couplers.

Much appreciated Steve. Thank you.
