When I was little (4 or 5 years old), my uncle had several sets of Lionel F3's, all Santa Fe.  I always referred to them as "Santa Fe's" not F3's.  I thought that Santa Fe was the only railroad that had these locomotives.  Every other railroad was just a fantasy scheme.  A Baltimore & Ohio F3 was a Baltimore & Ohio Santa Fe to me.  I was devastated when I found out that other roads actually owned these units.  I think I was more upset about the Santa Fe news than I was about the Santa Clause news.

Hello VisaDomeScott.....

That is a good looking F-3, the orange and silver colors look good together !!  I have the Williams blue and silver blue bonnet Santa Fe F-3's and seems like the silver always looks good on those F-3's.

I found the pics on the web. The New Haven seems to have a NYC B unit behind it! Very cool!

That's another FL9 painted up NYC.  Both units belong to CDOT (Connecticut Department of Transportation.)

Thanks Rusty! If you look up FL9 in Wikipedia, that pic comes up.

It's difficult for me to tell the difference visually between many F units. All the reference material I read speaks mostly to horsepower and electronic control differences. As I understand, the FL9 was the end of the F series run and was an electro diesel capable of electric operation from a third rail.

I totally agree with you on the Silver.  It really is a great looking paint job.  These pull a Lionel traditional 15" set of CZ cars.  I really didnt appreciate this locomotive paint until I had it at home and have loved these engines.

I was tempted by those ATSF units a few times... beautiful also!

Anyone know if this NP paint scheme was ever done in O gauge? Notice the dark colored cab with the lighter green wide stripe on the side, with a yellow 'war bonnet' front.

George

It's not called a "warbonnet." It's usually referred to as a "pine tree."  This was the original EMD designed paint scheme before it was replaced by the Raymond Loewy two tone green around 1954.

I don't believe it has been offered in O.

Thank you again Rusty. I know Warbonnet is Santa Fe. I just didn't know what to call it. Now I do.

I love the NH paint job.  Awesome

Apparently Lionel modeled at least two New Haven paint jobs in the F3. The black and orange is an archive release that I really like, but don't own. The original colors were silver with black and orange highlights.

George

Did they Make one with Legacy?

I don't think so. They made a Santa Fe Legacy. Maybe you could swap the shells.

OK, you get to shovel the roof and clear for the horns when it snows a foot or two while at the station too

Here are the New Haven's.  The Chekerboard is Conventional Classics and the McGinnis is Archive Series:

Both are conventional.
