Since hearing the latest news about RMT, I figured that I might ought to get some PEEPs while I still can. If you are too young to know, the basis of the PEEPs has been around for probably over 50 years. The best that I can remember, Walthers sold these as a kit way back when. Fortunately RMT has kept up with the times and here is the finished product that too has been around a while.

Each of these cars are lighted, have opening doors and is populated with people inside. Looking at the underside of the cars, it appears that if one wanted to, the couplers could easily be changed out for some that would allow a much closer coupling, which I think would really do these cars justice. I think the finished quality is very nice as you can see below. They also look to be the perfect set of cars to pull behind your K-Line 4-6-6T loco.

Yes, the Walthers Picker and Oscar came in HO and O scale kits, if I recall correctly. I remember them being something like $2.95 when I was a kid in the '70s. This was about the same time as the original Atlas O scale which is why I became a closet O scaler those many years ago. Finally sold off most of my HO stuff in the last few years to replace it with O scale and On30.

I wonder if those old diecast passenger car ends are still available? It would be kinda neat to build some Pikers and Oscars myself.

Those old Walthers passenger car ends and those metal sides, easily cut with tin snips for kit bashing, can be found in the O scale shows.  (as can the Pikers and Oscars kits, as well as the Sierra shorty coach and combine kits from Walthers, which are my favorites)  I have seen old photos of a Kentucky short line that used shorty coaches like the Sierra RR's.

What a great idea! As you say, perfect.

The only flaw with the RMT sets was that they didn't make extra coaches as single cars or two-car sets. I bugged Walter a couple of times about this but apparently he wasn't interested. Too bad, I think he would have made money offering extra coaches. The coaches were only in sets with a baggage car or observation, so it was hard to put together a train longer than four cars unless you wanted a whole bunch of extra baggage cars. I managed to pick up a few extra coaches in online auctions or by selling individual baggage cars.

It's a pity the Peeps and Beefs were never offered in Milwaukee orange and maroon Hiawatha colors. I have an extra set that one of these days I will repaint.
