(Gotta keep it off page 2). Big Grin

No, actually, Bruce had posted just before me, at 5:22pm, on the 23rd, bringing the thread back to the top at that time. My posting followed his at 6:15. I had been absent from the forum a bit due to myriad obligations. My praise of your work on the garage, and of Jerrman's "Hookline..." building, and of Scott's mine, had been percolating around in my noggin' for a bit, and I finally found the time to post. My interest was to mke a proper fuss over these laudable works, not to have the thread avoid "p.2" It has slipped there more than once and guys have found it anyways.
Best regards,
Frank

That's a grand and handsome building, Jerrman, aged just enough to make it appear experienced but not worn down. I really like it, and judging from how nice the two barges looked near it in the other photo, I can hardly wait to see the whole vista complete. The whole effort is going to have an authentic atmosphere all its own, tellng its own true story, I am sure. That's a really nice thing to share because we are going to enjoy seeing your updates, should you elect to do so, and that will add enjoyment to our little corner of the hobbyist's world.
Frank

thanks so much frank for your generous comments. makes it seem all worthwhile coming from someone with your talent (the pictures of which I peruse constantly for inspiration).

btw your comments about vulcan's work are spot on. I keep telling him that this is a modeling forum and to stop posting those prototype buildings and interiors but to no avail. Wink

Cesar I love that switching tower and the whole scene is great!

note: just say no to page 2 for this thread!!

Ok then, in the spirit of camaraderie just expressed by Vulcan & Jerrman, and DPC/David's cheerful encouragement, to date, here are several photos of a scene I particulary liked composing on the layout, though I had never seen such a place (a RR service yard?) in real life. My guides were: that coaling tower (tipple?) itself and the tracks it seemed to require; the space available for the whole scene; the enjoyment of just messin' around w/ all the other elements involved, like switches, a one-stall engine-house, etc. (The groundcover by the sand-tower was inc. at the time of the 2nd photo.)

John is this the Lionel station you bought from me? Looks great!

Yes it is... Thanks! Mr Hanks is too big, but the kids love him...

And that 1218 locomotive is an MTH which has not been run. It was just posing that day for the photo because I like the whole brute look of it. Maybe it's lonely and is looking for a better home?

Frank remember me? My coal tower is the first picture on this thread.
So I already showed you mine. LOL
I'd love to have that 1218 but I barley have enough to pay my bills right now and buy my heart med's.
Hopefully in a couple of months I'll be in much better shape and maybe we'll talk.

I feel the perfect fool for letting the connection slip my mind, David. I apologize if my forgetting was off-putting for you.

That's what I get for showing off, Red Face , and am duly red-faced in embarrassment.
Frank
Frank, your not remembering David's original post is totally understandable. It's hard to remember EVERY post on what has become everyone's favorite thread, as there are so many great entries. I had to go back to page one to remind myself of DPC's coal loader.

Now that I've seen it (again), DPC, that's one great structure. And I really like the night picture as you seem to. Terrific work.

Jerrman
Hey Vulcan, Can I take you home with me? Yeegodsman, you keep me (and us, I'll bet)gasping. That's so beautiful - hold onto your bippies, folks - I don't have words for it (!!!!!!! Eek ) Truly. I am actually speechless, sir.

However Big Grin I'll gve it a try (having calmed down a li'l bit.) Outstanding for me would be: #1, the arrangement of the whole sand-coal-water ensemble (is it deliberately lined-up in that order to service the arrangement of the receptacles for those things arranged along a steam locomotive ?); the realism: Do you know I had to squint - not jus' 'cause I'm in my 60's - to make sure I wasn't looking at real-life (suspecting Jerrman has been right all along in this regard Wink ) even in spite of the center-rail! Then, I realized - with some effort - that you had, likely, taken the scene and photographed it with the real foliage in the background (ya' li'l stinker.)

Absolutely flawless are: the wood is so old I can smell it; spilled coal has littered the ground; sand has collected outside the bin and shed, as well as along/among the track; the cool-as-heck rusty coal lifter-thing for taking coal from an actual pit under the track(!!!!!)up to the tower's top; the chutes; the extra-support iron bars that connect between vertical support legs; the authentic feel of it all.

What can any of us say, Vulcan, when enjoying your gifted work. It's a joy.
Frank

P.S. And what you said about my "having some Sellios" in me is not deserved, not by a long shot, but I will say I have poured over his South Manchester, for years, and have tried to learn, or maybe just bathed in his light, but I am greteful for your even mentioning me in the same sentence as he, esp. when it is you who deserves that compliment, sir, truth be told. Not I. But Thank You. Smile

DaveP, I like your downtown "slice-of-happiness" very much because it makes sense and is nicely configured as a busy little village, w/ people happily going about their busy day. It's charming. I can readily see why it gives you happiness. It made me happy just enjoying this peek at it. Nice job, sir.

Thanks again, Frank. Smile

Yes, there is an order to the alignment.

You saw the back of the tower where the coal is dumped to be loaded in the bin and of course the chute on the front side. The other buildings:

There is the sand bin where "green" sand is brought in. It's not green, just undryed. It's taken into the attached building, by hand in this case, and dried. It's then fed by compressed air, you can see the pipe in the next photo, up to that sanding tank. This is seen next to the chute in the above picture.

In this shot you can see the door where the sand was taken into the drying house.

The other building next to the tower is the winch house. (Where the winch was housed that raises the coal bucket Big Grin ).

And we all know what a water tower does. Smile
Oh, I see, now; I had an idea of how things looked in such a place, and vaguely what belonged there, but I wasn't knowledgeable of the specifics. Thanks for the explanation. For example, I didn't know what the tank was for, mounted on the side of the tower as you have it, but the moment you explained it, I could make sense of it and of its delivery "spout" and connected its presence immediately to the sand tower with its delivery pipes on the coal tower (tipple?) on my layout.

Also, concerning your sand element structures, I had no idea of their specific functions. Thanks to you, I believe I understand their purpose, now. I've concluded that wet sand would clog its delivery, and the pipe system on your model would benefit the drying process, as does the height of the sand tower on my model.

I believe I understand where sand is delivered to on a locomotive's body and why it is needed.

Thanks again, Vulcan.
Frank
The pipes are just a means to move the dried sand to the tower. The drying is done in the drying house (wet sad would probably clog those pipes, too).

For the record, a tipple is where coal is extracted and loaded into hoppers to be delivered to the coaling tower.

(Sorry, that's a pet peeve of mine. Smile )

But this is kind of fun.
..just saying hello Smile w/ another favorite scene from Moon Township...

(I have a hard time making up my mind about which is my favorite spot; don't you, on your layouts?)
(Plus, I was feeling a li'l lonely on p.4, so far away from the action Wink )

P.S. A good friend of mine, Roy Baker (of bakersrailroadshop.com) said he had a great, very profitable experience at The Big E, in W. Springfield, MA, this past weekend; that 22,000+ folks showed up.
Frank

I agree Will. Great work and great photo.

BTW, one pet peeve I've posted (in addition to my agreeing there's not enough topics on each page) is that the original person who started the thread is not listed, only the last person to post. If I hadn't been closely following Frank's (Moonson)  thread here, I wouldn't know he started the topic. To me, it's helpful since anything Frank posts (as well as Vulcan, SIRT and some others) are topics I want to look at post-haste.

I agree Bill,
I'd buy a copy if they did. I know there are a few who for whatever reason haven't put any pictures on this thread and I wish they would.

MikeCT - I like that farm scene

To me guys this is what model Railroading is about.
More pictures please!!!!!
