5315 is the only offering from Lionel in NYC lettering that has stripes. ( that I seen )  The stripes are correct for an as delivered locomotive fresh from the builder’s photograph, then delivered by Alco Schenectady to the Central. BUT, 5315 had a bad history. That was the Hudson involved in the fatal wreck at Little Falls in 1940. A lot of lives were lost in that accident along with the engineer, & fireman, ….there was a road foreman in the cab as well, miraculously, he survived…..it’s also the only Hudson not salvageable from a wreck, …..

I think I have been very tired each time I have looked at the catalog on these. For some reason I thought that the stripes were actually an outlined box like the Pennsy had. I just looked again and my eyes actually see it right now. It could be that when I was watching the video, I heard what Ryan said about he wreck, and decided not to really look at it. For the record, yeah, a little tired today, but able to see, lol. Thanks Pat for furthering my education.

Absolutely Pat. I had told a young guy some months ago at my work that you can learn from anyone. Well, he didn't apparently. I love Hudson's, but I love great looking non-striped ones better than striped one(unless it is a Dreyfuss).

Also, darker side rods look great, but #5401 I believe with the PT tender is a later in life Hudson as well as one that was on the Big Four for a while? Isn't that what Pete and Ryan had talked about before in reference to the Tender and the class lights? Or did I read something wrong?

I don’t know the detailed history on them, but there are plenty of old photos online of 5401 with a PT tender and class lights, the way it is portrayed in the catalog. That said the Lionel PT tender is (I think) a little different than the one it is pictured with in some photos. I may order this one, since I like the darkened rods and I don’t have a PT tender in my collection yet.

Ehhh, twist my arm on dark rods, or bright rods, ….one roundhouse practice the Central prided itself on ( when the Central Proper was in its glory ) was to assign a mechanic to wire wheel the side rods with a big angry power tool, then another fella sprayed the rods with clear lacquer.  This was two fold, according to grandad, …..one appearance was everything back then, and having the rods cleaned helped mechanics look for cracks and other defects that would be obscured by grease & grime. Surely as the Central proper became unhealthy, these practices went to wayside in cost cutting measures…So, sure, darkened rods would or could symbolize the end for steam was coming soon,….

Greg, that engine had a one of a kind tender, a PT2. It was specifically built to haul more water so it didn’t have to make a water stop on its run and the Big 4 didn’t have water pans.
Probably the one way to get a tender like that is custom made either by a brass fabricator or 3D printer. Unlikely a manufacturer will make one just because its one of a kind and couldn’t be used on any other engine, NYC or otherwise.

5401 being a west ender, didn’t have a water scoop Greg, …and the PT tender that Lionel has isn’t the same as the one used behind 5401, ….we certainly can’t expect a whole new tooled PT-2 tender, but it would’ve been a jaw dropper for us NYC diehards…but 5401 would’ve had class lights throughout her entire assignment to Big Four territory. Big Four engines rarely strayed far from home trackage ……you like it, & that’s all that matters…..😉

On a somewhat unrelated note - can you fix the stripes on my Dreyfuss tender or are we stuck with those thin stripes Lionel gave us forever? 😉
