This may not be the intent of this forum, and if that's the case I'll remove my post so as not to offend, but I was wondering who here actually works for the railroads?...and what do you do?

My sudden fascination with this subject is that I put in for a job as track maintenance for the Canandian National RR....my grandfather worked for the CB&Q most of his life with the last 3 years working for BN before he passed away...so this could be keeping one theme alive{I stess the alive part-lol}- that and I always wanted to travel and I'm used to long days and hard work from the factory that let me go 2 months ago, so this begs the question of who here works/plays with 1:1 and smaller scale trains?

I worked for Norfolk Southern as a conductor in 1999-2000 out of Harrisburg and Conway, PA. Also volunteered as a brakeman and conductor for two tourist railroads in Western PA from 1997 till 2001. I'm currently looking at getting back into railroading as a career. I liked the work, but was a little too "immature" for the railroad lifestyle at 19-20 years old.

Probably not. Simply watch who posts here on the Real Trains sub-forum, and it shouldn't take you very long to figure out which ones "are in the business". Then just check only those profiles. You'll probably find only 12 to 15, as a guess.

Used to work for the Norfolk & Western.  About a year and half after the joining of forces, becoming the Norfolk Southern, my wife startedcomplaining about my job so I left the company in an attempt to keep the peace.  I worked in the signals & communication department, signal gang 901 and then as a signal maintainer on the Chicago Terminal.  I loved my job and had I known then that the wife was still going to leave after another 10 years, I would have never left the railroad.  Such be life.

Volunteered for three years as fireman, engineer, occasional conductor and eventually supevisor of locomotive engineer for the now defunct tourist operations of the Laurel Highlands Scenic RR, followed by the Westmoreland Scenic RR.  Also functioned as Mechanical Officer for the LHRR in charge of steam locomotive maint and passenger car brake inspections.
