I am not on their Payroll Yet, however, with all due respect, I probably should be. I really like their Innovations and raising the Bar for Technology....Is it Price friendly?, not Necessarily, but, this new way of running our trains is really Lots of FUN...Legacy/TMCC  coupled with Scale Like Engines/Track/Freight/Passenger/ and yes, Sound Cars, has really impacted our Hobby... I can not put a price on the pleasure I receive when getting together with my Model railroad buddies...We forget our troubles and simply enjoy Our Trains....I wonder what the next VISIONLINE Engine will Be???? Happy Railroading...

I wonder what the next VISIONLINE Engine will Be???? ...

The next VisionLine locomotive should  have been the Allegheny steamer.     Who knows.... I may have even sprung for that one with the right features included at it's current offering price.    And no, I'm not thinking "depleted coal" load either!!!  But enhanced steam blow-down affects at the current prices several dealers are advertising in their pre-order price lists  might have done it for me.

Sigh....  Wasn't meant to be this time around.  Perhaps next time.

Wow, what a Variation Of Opinions!!! The Question is, Who is buying this new (GG1) Fully Featured, VISIONLINE, Twin Speakers, Electrified Pantographs, Legacy Controlled Beautiful Model of one of Americas Finest and nicest Locomotives....Yes, I am getting the Tuscan 4913...This will pull my Congressional Passenger Set...I will just Pretend it has overhead Electrification!!!!  Thank You LIONEL....I know it's a little Pricy, but, I did the BTO Early pricing with my Local Hobby Shop...Personally, I like to be the First Owner do to the 2 Year Warranty. Now, Let's run trains....Happy Railroading...

Me! In for one, considered getting two.  Not only do I think they will hold their value, but I predict they will go up in value.  I too am very tired of hearing the same few people across multiple threads groan about the price.  I'm relatively new to these boards and I already know whose comments to not pay much attention to.

It's a fair price for a Vision Lion engine and I'm going to be happy to own one.  Like Larry said, you're getting more than just the Electrified Pantographs.  These engines are going to sound amazing with the twin speakers.

Each person needs to decide for himself if this GG1 is worth the price for the features it comes with.  There are a "vocal" few who think the price is high, and others are happy to own older versions because they can live without the new features.  But reality is the Visionline GG1's are going to be the most ordered engines in the catalog because many are excited to own one at their price.

To answer the OPs question - yes, it's worth the price.

Yes, A VISIONLINE ALLEGHENY, although Price would bring on Conversations and you have to Agree with that comment. Technology, like all the new Features on the Honda Cars that I sell, come with a Price.  Safety is a Hugh Concern  to us all, and it comes with a price??? Cars cost more, run smoother, have Back up Cameras, Lane Change features, Navigation, Collision Warning, have Blue Tooth Hands Free Features..Get better Gas Mileage,  The List is Endless...Our Trains now can be Controlled by I-Pad and soon our I -Phones. The Plus for our trains, like our Cars, More Enjoyment. So, I am very Happy to see Our Train Manufacturers moving The Goal Post, Raising The Bar so to speak.  This is the Best of Times in our Hobby, I am glad to share our thoughts together, right here on the OGR FORUM...Happy Railroading.

No argument there, Larry.  There's no such thing as a $200 fender-bender repair bill anymore.   Even my side-view mirror has a camera in it.  So God forbid somebody bumps the break-away folding mirror off the car.  Everything costs big bucks to repair -- even for the raw cost of the parts before you get to the labor!

Frankly, I don't see the attraction.  There are various renditions that are very available for a fraction of the price.  Again, I wish they had done the Allegheny in Vision style, with at least as many steam effects as the VL Challenger.  Besides, I'm not feeling like shelling out for what I think is an over-priced reissue with a gimmick.  Especially since a chunk went toward by bourbon collection this last autumn.  I was very lucky this year and scored several bottles of Pappy Van Winkle, as well as some William Larue Weller and George T. Stagg from the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection.  I've got a small pour in my little Glencairn glass right now and quite happy watching our Legacy ESE set traversing our little empire as my RK scale RS-1 is pulling a freight that's a scale mile long.

Didn't do the GG1...  Went for the 6 car UP set for the FEF...  And a few of the boxcars with sound to spread amongst the consist...  Looking forward to them!!

And just as a side note...  Ya know, it's amazing that some participants manage time to enjoy the hobby with the time they spend responding to nearly every single solitary post...  Ad nauseum with response after response...  Then again I guess there's prob not a whole lot to do in the mountains.

Cheers!

With only having a part time job right now I skipped on preordering anything from this book with the exception of the poultry car. However to answer the question, I would have loved to be able to have ordered a GG-1. They are one of my favorite engines, Old Rivets was my favorite version, and the as-delivered paint scheme is favorite paint job. So it would have been worth the price to me, but for right now it will have to be on the "hope I can get it later list".

Bill

The GG-1 Loco's look like a real sweet offering from Lionel. If I lived in an area in which they operated, I'd strongly consider one But I don't. so for me and my layout I just don't think it'll happen and that's ok for me. I did get many of the sound freight cars that are available in the catalog. I really like running those things on my train link behind my Legacy Loco's

It's the first Vision Line loco I haven't felt so darned compelled to buy in a while... and you know that's a good thing for my pocket book.  ... it needed a Vision Line break.  For those placing the order for the GG-1 Loco's I'm sure when they come in you'll really enjoy them. Can't wait for all the video's to hit the forum when they arrive in your hands!

Leapinlarry ..... you're a wise man .... for such a young guy. I wish I was one of your model railroad buddies!

And, those folks talking of financials .... I'm with ya! Money is tight in my house, too. For the most part ... I have to sell train stuff, to be able to afford new train stuff.

I just like to play with trains.

I believe the phrase is:  "If you haven't got anything good to say about anybody, come sit by me", attributed to Alice Roosevelt Longworth.  That aside, the features of the GG1 are incredible, the price is comparable to other vision line products, and its sound is spectacular.  To me, however, the GG 1 is one of the ugliest locos to ever ride the rails.  Raymond Loewy design studio or not, that thing is just ugly looking (IMHO) .

I have the JLC GG-1. Beautiful model, the best of the "scale"  GG-1's, except for the 3rd Rail version. Got it in garish paint for cheap, had it repainted. The Vision Line issue seems a lot of money for additional gimmicks. I imagine there will be a few of the JLC versions on offer for a good price.

I also have a "scale" Williams with TMCC added. Running on the club layout with a train of scale (>18") passenger cars, it's hard to tell why it is inferior.

Question: since the pre-order regimen has been in place have any of the offered locomotives been canceled for lack of enough orders?

Great question Chuck.  Not that I recall.  We've seen some cancellations from Atlas-O, Sunset, and MTH every now and then.  Not too uncommon at all.  I think the potential exists for Lionel with this large BTO product offering in 2016 to announce a cancellation.  Time will tell.

I doubt Lionel would cancel a VL offering, but the Steel City Switcher seems ripe for being cancelled -- unless dealers "believe" in the product enough to order "extra's" on spec.  I had my eye on it, but not at the $1050 street-price ($1300 MSRP) for an 0-8-0 and 4 freight cars.    So that's my nomination for Lionel's first BTO cancellation -- as much as I wanted it.

I had to think for a second, and then I realized, in all the years I've been into trains (50), I've never owned a GG-1 of any kind. I've also never bought anything Visionline. I guess that makes this one a double fail.

Don't worry Elliot... you still have time. That VLBB will sneak up and bite yah!

With my retirement happening in 32 days, my train budget will be decreasing. $1,000 plus engines do not interest me at all nor does $600 or $700 diesels interest me. Buying on the secondary market is where it happens.

As for a scale GG1 that retailed at one time for about $700 and now has added blinking led's on its pantographs that will retail for about $1200, I wish Lionel well and good luck in selling these premium engines. Not for me.

Just my opinion.  Thank you.

Even though I was hoping for something worthy of the image Lionel has created for its Vision line, like an Allegheny or a Prr T1 4-4-4-4 with a bunch of operating features like lots of smoke effects, bottom line is that I'm glad Lionel continues to offer a nice array of scale products.

Potrzbe;

In the words of that great philosopher and humanitarian, Ebenezer Scrooge, "bah... humbug"  IMHO, the GG-1 was, and is, the pinnacle of classy,  streamlining. Love the Tuscan 5-stripe, but always preferred the large keystone.

Well, I placed an order for one today, the #4935. It's all my fault! I should have snagged one of those Lionel Scale TMCC  GG1's years ago when they seemed to be every where in the $700 $800 price range. This will be my first and only GG1.

Peter,  "OGR PAPER MAGAZINE SUBSCRIBER" Now that made me laugh out loud, Good one! You made that burning sensation emanating from the wallet in my back pocket, caused by today's order, to subside for at least a moment.

Well, if you're a digital subscriber, they happily put that in your avatar area loud and proud. But pay more for the paper subscription and zero recognition. Go figure.

I'm happy with my upgraded MTH GG1.   Proto2 and works well.  The only thing I don't like about it is the pilot truck hunts back and forth as it runs.
