This one caught me off guard and I think I am going to order one. Did everyone see this?!

The more I think about it... I want one.

k4 pre order

I was trying to enlarge the pictures to see if the drivers have the gold pinstripes on them, but I cannot tell. If its half as beautiful as the previously released Atlantic E6  - count me in!

Anyone know how long they will be taking orders for.

JDADDY,

Yes that is a surprise.......especially being a pre-order. Don't remember it being in any catalog recently or any special announcements. The K4s with the long haul tenders went for around $1200 list. The K4s with the normal sized K4 tenders were like $900. Don't know if one with a E6 tender should be as much as the one with a long haul tender. In any event I love K4s, I own two Legacy K4s postwar versions (#1330 and a re-painted Polar RR) plus a K-Line 1361.

Go ahead and order let us know when it is delivered and do a video.

Wow! $1229, sure glad I grabbed the original Legacy k4 for $749 preorder.

Having said that, although this is a special offering from Nicholas Smith. I do like how Lionel has been offering different tender variations on stuff these days.

These k4s are super smooth runners with that K Line style gearbox. Mine is definitely at the top of my favorites list.

Item from the new catalog maybe??

Good point. Do you suppose this will be announced in the new catalog?

The website states the engine is a “Nicholas Smith Exclusive”, so I would not expect it to show up in the regular catalog.

Yes, but Lionel's name is still on the box.

I'm sure they'll be taking orders as long as their quantity lasts.  According to their ad in a magazine, there's only 25 of them made.  So whether it's one week, one month, or one year, I suspect they'll take orders until they hit #25.

ONLY 25?! Why so few?

I suspect that's the minimum order for Lionel to make these.  They probably don't want to make 50 and be stuck with them.  A good dealer will know how many to make based on their customers.  I'm sure if they thought they could sell more they would do a bigger run.  25 is still a large investment for a shop.

I believe you are correct.  When Pat's and Muffins did their special run Berks, it was discussed that 25 was the minimum order.  Those projects were tied to other Berks being in the catalog - I didn't get the impression the projects could "stand on their own" at 25 units without Berks being simultaneously produced in other road names and/or numbers for the catalog.  So, this does make you wonder if K-4's are going to be in the upcoming catalog.  If so, however, it wouldn't seem they would be available in 2018 as the NS website suggests.
