The machines that use to be built in this country were amazing. But in reality what is happening on North American railroads today surpasses anything in history and probably any where else in the world. A combination of technologies came together at a time when the burden of excess government regulation had been lifted. High horsepower locomotives with clean efficient prime movers, AC traction motors with high torque at low speed and no tendency to spin, PTC, computer technology, and distributed power have changed the face of railroading. Our freight railroads are moving 25,000 ton trains that are 18,000 feet long with a one man crew. Having spent a life time in railroading, I am glad I am still here to see how it is turning out.
