When I added a PS2.0 PRR 2-8-0 to DCS it came up with no problems - engine #8421. I ran it and then shut it down - and turned off track power to that loop it was on (FXD1). On an adjacent loop (FXD2) I placed a PS3.0 PRSL 2-8-0 6493 engine and added it - it came up as PRR 8421? I deleted it and added again - still came up with the wrong engine's address?

DCS version 4.3.

Why does it do this? And, do I have to manually change the address to correct?

This can happen when you try to add and  have more than 1 engine on the track (any track) receiving power.   Delete the engine and add it back again with no other engines receiving power. I've been pushing this for years .

I'm not sure what you mean by   "  Still came up the wrong engine's address. "It's not possible to have 2 engines showing in the remote with the same address, However it's possible to have 2 engines with the same ID but only 1  will come up on the remote.

Anyway Delete them both and start over. (only  the engine you're trying to add should be receiving power. everything else dead)

Good advise, although being a somewhat lazy guy, I was able to add all of my locomotives back into my remote with all locomotives powered. This was following an upgrade of my TIU and remote that required factory reset of both. Every time I selected add MTH engine, the system added the engine with the highest ID# (that wasn't already in the remote).

A weak DCS signal can cause the remote to not add an engine and, instead, show the last engine that it did successfully add.

Delete the second engine and add it at the same place on the layout where the last engine was successfully added.

Also, if you haven't updated your DCS to DCS 5.0, I strongly suggest that you do so. Several bugs were fixed in DCS 5.0.

Yep . It 's possible but trouble usually starts after adding about 6 or 7 engines (if you're lucky). As you know engine IDs are stored in the engine and stick with the engine unless factory reset , edited to another address. or if their ID is taken by another engine on a add engine command., In this case the engine should add to the lowest available ID in the remote..

I only had power on to the one track with the one engine on it, but Barry's point may be the case. I have to check DCS signal around the new track work. Unfortunately, I cannot upgrade using my laptop computer - its owned by my work and they prohibit any software being downloaded. GRJ did my last upgrade ~ several months ago ~ and it will be awhile before I can get 5.0. I don't have a lot of hobby time as it is and DCS is starting to annoy me like it did 10-12 years ago.

Well yeah!... Find a spot with a perfect dcs signal.   Add your engine there.   You don't need version 5 to add engines  with out problems, however we need a good dcs signal and one engine at a time.    Did you get a chance to try it again??

Gregg, tried it again last night before bed, first deleted it out and then added it again at a point that is closest to TIU and track feeder wire is shortest length from terminal strip - it loaded correctly. I am installing the STAR wiring in the layout expansion. I am hoping once I get all mainline loops "closed-up" I'll have good continuity with voltage and DCS signal all around.
