The Williams and Railking Trainmasters have not changed in years. Why can't they change the railings on these engines. It couldn't cost all that much and would make a world of difference in the looks department. They make scale railings for their other diesels. Don

My guess is that they are trying to preserve the look of the postwar versions, as these are basically the same (on the outside) as the PW ones.
Another factor is the scale railings on the Lionel Legacy ones are fairly delicate. One thing about the Williams and Railking, those railings are bulletproof!

I swear the ones on the Legacy unit is brass. I have the Wabash unit and I feel like I'm going to break them every time I pick the engine up.
Before Mike Reagan left Lionel, he found me a shell for my Wabash, Lionel has a "scrap shells" section. The one I got looked like new, don't know what qualified it as "scrap". I moved all the lights and stuff over (easy), and it's like a new locomotive.
I bought my Wabash TM off the Internet, and the railings were trashed! (I know at the time). Other than the shell being beat, it was fine. A new shell, and it's back in service. I made handrails for the old one, but all the little supports were broken, so I had to glue them to the shell. With the other damage, I figured if I could get a new shell it would be best, never did get around to painting them. I also couldn't really do decent lift bars for the front and back, those were all busted as well.

Cool stuff. Sounds like a fun project.
Made much easier by buying the new shell from Lionel. OTOH, I did manage to make some very credible handrails for the old shell, so the next time I need handrails, I'll have more confidence that I could actually do them.
