I'm wondering how the Williams SD90 locomotives look with traditional size rolling stock?

I'm assuming the SD90 is a typical well-made WBB product with good conventional operation and a little sparse on the detailing.

I'm thinking about it relative to the Lionel Lionmaster SD90MAC locomotives. I'm a big fan of the Lionmaster SD90, and they look good with my traditional size rolling stock. But, Lionel isn't producing Lionmaster as this time.

Just looking at the figures in the catalogs, the numbers are similar: The WBB engine is 17.75" long and operates on O-31 curves, while the Lionmaster is 17.5" long and  operates on O-31 curves. A scale SD90 is 20.25" long for comparison (also O-31 curves).

I don't want to start a Williams vs. Lionel debate (although like many topics, it is probably going to end up there). I'm wondering how the WBB and Lionmaster SD90 are compared to each other in size. Lionel does a good job of selective compression on the Lionmaster locomotives, so it is reduced, not only in length, but also in height and width, compared to a scale locomotive. Looking at catalog photos of the WBB SD90, it looks a little short and blocky, like they reduced the length compared to a scale engine, but perhaps otherwise scale width and height?

But, I haven't seen it in person, so I'm wondering how the WBB SD90 looks with traditional size rolling stock. If it looks huge (like a scale locomotive) next to traditional size cars, than it might not be the best option.

I do not own a WBB SD-90 but I have looked at them at a LHS.  You're right, there a little blocky looking, a little plain jane, but thats what they made for -  a runner, kid friendly, not a musuem piece.  IMO they would look fine next to most traditionally sized cars.  I did not get the impression that they were too tall.

just my 2 cents.

If you are wondering, about the WBB SD 90, that Trainworld, has on sale,

and I think Pats trains does also,  I have got the 21812, Katy, and the Alaskan, also,

they are 17 1/2 inches long, I am running on 072 curves, cause to much hang,

on 031, and knocks over scenery,  ( smooth, simple,) $110.00, running simple 027 cars behind them  ,  Playing with trains on a budget , It works!!

You better buy the Williams SD-90's while they are on sale. They may be gone soon as Williams didn't make as many SD-90's as they did SD-45's.

The SD-45's are great runners and haul a lot of freight cars. The overhang factor is there on 031, so try using 042 curves and it won't look as bad.

If they have unpowered diesel units for, you better buy these now. Rumor from Bachmann website, no more dummies in O gauge line.

I have the Conrail Quality version I got from train world it was 110 but with a presidents day discount I got it for $99.00. I run it with traditional cars and it looks great with any car in my collection even passenger and scale cars. I think they are a real bargain very good quality, its very heavy, reliable, good sounds, mine will pull anything. I eventually added LED lighgting and cab figures. Here's a few videos of mine, hope this helps
