I am wiring a siding and I would like to have lights on my control panel such that the green light is on when powered and the red when unpowered. But how do I light the red light in the absence of power?

Well, if you have a switch on the panel controlling power to the siding, use a SPDT switch and wire the red light to the off side of the switch. If it's controlled remotely, or from multiple places, I'd probably use a relay and wire the indicator lights to each side of the set of contacts.
Again my ignorance shows....what kind of relay and where can I get one. John, watch for the Press Release as I will be naming you the Senior Electrical Engineer on my RR. The pay pales in comparison to the prestige of the position. In time we will try and get you a company car....scale yet to be determined. Thank you.
Shown here using LEDs but you could use light bulbs also as indicator lights.

You can buy relays in a lot of places. If you get stuck I have some extras I will sell at my cost.
if you do not want to use relays, just use DPDT toggle switches, the wiring is similar to that shown with the relay contacts except use all 3 contacts of one set for red or green LEDs or bulbs. .
