I'm looking for a smokebox front for my 4-6-0 project and ran across the Wiseman Model Services website:

http://www.locopainter.com/

I found a part (BS-111), the writeup says it's :

On3/On30 D&RGW K-37 SMOKEBOX FRONT, 76" DIAMETER

I know nothing about On3/On30.  From what I've read, On3/On30 is "the same size as O scale, only smaller"?!?!?!?!?!

The front end of my loco is actually 1-5/8" diameter (78" in O scale).  Wiseman also lists a 79" front (BS-107).

So what would be the actual size of these 2 smokebox fronts, in inches?  Should I get the BS-111, which to me should be slightly smaller than the front end of my loco, or S-107, which should be slightly larger?  I'm leaning towards BS-111, but until I know the actual size I won't place my order.

Speaking of Wiseman Model Services, I did a search on the forum and got only 5 hits.  Is this a new company or just a well kept secret?

(come on PSC, get that catalog out.  You're losing business)

Keith Wiseman down in Kentucky has been about for quite awhile, Bob.

Has a rather large assortment of "stuff" although much of it tends to be directed towards narrow gauge modeling.  Usually has a large presence on eBay - wisemodserv

Shoot him an e-mail and ask, and he may have a part that will work better than that on hand.  Been buying detail parts from him for years, myself now.

Might also want to visit Stevenson Preservation and contact them as well: http://stevensonpreservationlines.com/

Hopefully, good stuff,

Bob, I've never left simple straight DC for my 2 rail - works just perfectly for my needs

Martin,

Knowing what I know now I wish I could step into the "Wayback Machine" and start with 2-rail.

I suppose I could do 1 of 2 things.  (1) Gut the engines and wire the DC motors so a DC power pack going to the middle rail and an outside rail would provide power, or (2), redo ALL the wheels on my engines and rolling stock for 2-rail use, and replace the 3-rail track with 2-rail or rip the center rail out.

Re-wheeling and buying new track are not on the table (aka in the pocketbook) at this point.  I don't mind the 3rd rail, so IF/WHEN the electronics go out in my small fleet of engines they'll probably sit on the shelf until they all go.  At that time I can yank the PS2/ERR/Locosounds out and start the conversions.

The Weaver 4-6-0 chassis I got from Ed Rappe has already been proven to work, at least on a straight section of test track using my old Troller Transamp1 and with only the DC motor installed.  It actually ran very well, maybe just a bit fast.
