Is that a telescoping draw-bar, similar to the Milwaukee S3 northern that I see on the back? It looks very similar in design to the ones I've seen before:

It looks like both the Engine and Tender have the Close Coupling hardware...must work better that way..

I've seen this method used on European HO by Fleishmann, Roco and Marklin for decades.
