York

Arnold, I'm with you.  I have been to York twice.  It isn't about train related purchases at all.  For me, it is about getting together and seeing so many train friends at one place.  I miss seeing friends at other shows as well.  I saw 3 or 4 at the February Greenberg show in Monroeville, and then everything was cancelled.  York opens the door to see friends from farther away than the few Western Pennsylvania venues, most of whom are Forum members.

Go Yankees!  I might as well say it since the Pirates are back to fielding a AAA team with a few exceptions. 

I would love to go. I've never been there before so it's about time. I don't "need" more trains but I'm sure I'll find something. Meeting the OGR crowd would be a big part of it...

What a timely thread.  This morning while walking the dog, it was in the 50's with the feel of fall in the air.    I said to my wife, this weather reminds me that the Oct. York meet is getting close.  (Just not this year) 😥   And the arrows in grocery store aisles, I can't escape the York memories.     I'm missing my York trips of light shopping and meeting OGR forum friends.    When the meet does happen, it's going to be a happy time.  April 2021 hotel reservations have been secured a two different Hampton Inns.  See you all there!

Thursday morning breakfast.

Last minute set up and pricing. Greeting regular customers and meeting new ones. Talking building models, sharing techniques, methods and materials. Thursday night dinner. Friday night dinner. Chick-Fil-A for the ride home. 

Been to every York since 1991. Can’t wait to go back. 

I have attended every York since 1985 and yes I still miss it.

York is that time machine that takes us back to our childhoods, to memories of being 6 and walking into that big train department or store.  It's very hard to express the magic, but I can still recall my first York (Fall 2000) and that feeling of having recaptured a precious moment of my youth.

I hope for the Spring as well.

I intend to be there at the next one, whenever that may be. 

I've been to every one in some capacity since I' moved to southeast PA in 1997, first as a browsing/buying member, and then as a table holder for the last 5 years or so. 

I'd like to say I'll be at my same table in the Red Hall, but who can say if table arrangements may be jumbled up a bit by any precautionary methods that may need to take place.

I miss York, and all my other shows, my vacations, my trips "back home", and conventions...l feel like a home-body.

There will be a April meet at York. I feel very sure of it. I can't wait to go. There are not many future Yorks for me. The vaccine will be available way, way before April. My Doctor said I will be one of the first ones to get it. I have missed 3 Yorks since 1976, and I have a 500 mile drive each way. OH, by the way I am 90 years young. GO YANKEES!

I have never been to York, at least the train show, and have no plans to attend any in the future. Being mainly a two-railer, the York show does not appeal to me. I would rather spend my modeling tokens at a scale show such as the one in Strasburg.

I am hoping that the next York will be a three day event.  I am sure there are a lot of table holders ready to sell and I am ready to buy. Do I have a list ? Not really, more of a category.  I am on the hunt for standard gauge that I should have purchased out of the catalog but had trouble committing at the time. Of course I will be on the lookout for some nice original prewar also. The budget will be what I haven’t spent at all the train shows that have been canceled and it’s burning a hole in the pocket.

No longer being a TCA member but having attended most all the York meets thru the 90’s working a friends table. I enjoyed watching the people having purchased little to nothing, and getting my cartoon books autographed. Since joining this forum I would like to go back to York not for the train meet but to attend the breakfast get together and the DCS Users Forum. This would give me the opportunity to meets all the great folks I have met in this forum. People like Arnold who starts some great topics, Mark who is building what will turn out to be a great layout we all have been following, GRJ who has helped me tremendously and that is just a start, the list is endless.  Here is wishing everyone a Safe, Happy and Healthy Labor Day weekend. 

My first York was 1984. Although I'm not buying any more trains, York has been a sign of Spring, and the opener of the Christmas season for me. I miss the freedom of being allowed to go where I wish...church, school, the library, gatherings like York, etc.

Since 1990 58 Yorks in a row and before that on and off once a year during family raising years.

Boy do I miss the Round the Clock diner.

I plan to attend the next York Meet, whenever it is held. I enjoy everything about York, but most enjoyable is the opportunity to spend time with fellow hobbyists and friends *new and old). I pretty much have all the trains I could ever want or need, and I promised Wendy that the engine I now have coming from Trainworld will be the last one I plan to buy. It certainly will be the last until I sell a lot of the excess that I will no longer have space for now that we have just moved to a new condo with full basement, the finishing of more than half of it which was just completed a couple of days ago (that project will be documented in the first issue of OGR for 2021). I am still debating what I want to do in that space, which will also include the OGR editorial office and a lounge area. I'm actually giving a lot of thought to devoting it to an O gauge tinplate layout, but that is by no means a done deal at this point.

But back to the York Meet. I have written-off 2020 as a "lost year" for all such events, and now am just looking forward to seeing this year end, hopefully on a high note from the standpoint of the pandemic and other things going on in our society. The move to a new home has definitely boosted my spirits, and I'm looking forward to working on a new layout in the late fall and winter months. Although my favorite York Meets are in the fall, I will plan to attend in April 2021 if, the Good Lord willing, there is such an event.

I've been to 29 "Yorks" - coming from the West Coast.  I've made pretty good use of my time on the east coast including enjoying the "awe" of the number of trains at York.  But the real point of York has been seeing and socializing with a number of guys (and a gal or two) from around these United States.

I'm not sure that I'll attend the Apri, 2021, York Meet - if there is one.  But, just in case, my hotel room is reserved.  

I'd go if they'd have it in the fall but will wait like the rest of you until they actually have it again. Until then I'll find stuff to do. 

I find humorous the people that say I’m not here for the trains or I don’t need any more trains, I am here to see friends and make new ones.  Well those are the same people you see with armloads of boxes on the way out to the parking lot. If they did a trunk check of every one that has said that I think few would pass.  It is the best, seeing and speaking to those with whom we converse with through our keyboards daily or Even weekly but you can’t hide behind that big box you are carrying out the door.  

I purposely step into my train area before leaving for York, just to remind myself that I have more trains than any ten people could possibly use in a lifetime.  Some how when my wife drops me off at the door and hands over the checkbook and a bank envelope my memory becomes fuzzy, then upon entering the first hall I come down with total amnesia. I am like a kid in a candy store, and when I get home and unload the suv I always say  “oh no what had I done”.

I will definitely be going to the next York whenever that is. I have gone to at least one York every year since 2001 except for one year which I forget what year that was. I wish I would have kept track of them like other people have and saved my ID cards. 

I am also a 2 Railer but #1) there is a certain excitement at York that I just can’t put a finger on. I have come to believe that some folks who love going to York feel that excitement and others who don’t have an interest in York do not. #2) All my friends are 3 railers and a bunch of them also attend York, and #3) while it’s true that when it comes to 2 rail trains the Strasburg show has approximately 150 times more 2 rail trains than York despite being about 1/15 the size of York. However, when it comes to the other items that are common to both 3 rail and 2 rail York probably has the edge. I am at the point where I try not to buy any more trains when I go to these shows because other than a NYC Niagara there is nothing that I really need. #4) I also like seeing new products that become available or meeting for the first time people who I have only seen in videos or magazine articles. Bottom line for me is I enjoy all the aspects of York. I can’t wait to go again.

I thought the Forum moderators  who I totally respect and believe are doing a great job, put the kibosh to this topic, because I could not find it. Now that I found it a few minutes ago, I am delighted to see that it is running under a Forum I never visited before about the York Train Shows. Its been a great pleasure for me to read all the replies.

First, a word to the moderators. Keep doing what you're doing. If, for any reason, you think I said something out of order on the Forum, don't hesitate to delete it, move it, whatever you think is best for the Forum,  and don't feel you have to explain to me why. My intention is always to entertain, share, uplift, inspire and promote this Forum, OGR Magazine, model railroaders and model railroading, and I have total confidence and trust in your judgment.

Now, to all my Forum friends. When we do get together at York, whenever that may be, the comraderie, fun and the whole experience will be sweeter than ever before. Of this, I have no doubt. Arnold

I agree, Arnold!  I have had 3 or 4 comments over the years deleted because I got off topic!  I was guilty for sure.  The moderators did the right thing in every case!

I attended my first York Meet in April 1984 and have not missed one in these 36 years. I definitely plan on being at the next 70 Yorks!!!

I'll be at the next one.  The April meet is scheduled for what I hope to be my first week of retirement.  

Like so many others, I have enough trains for several lifetimes, but I always see something that's new to me, and a few items always manage to follow me home.

I intend to put more emphasis on the get-togethers next time.

Arnold, this topic did disappear on me but I made sure to be updated on notifications so I would find it again.

Of course I would love to be at York again. The main reason I had gone in the first place was encouragement from Peter as well as Tony at my local train store.

Sure, part of the reason I go is trains and anything related to them. Being still early in my years of train"ing", there is always going to be something. Sure I have branched out in not just buying engines, but rolling stock, autos, and some buildings as well.

Getting back to people though, Peter made sure to invite me out to breakfast the first year I went October 2017. We were late(my coworker Bobby and I drove on the offramp and we're going way out of the way). We sort of only just saw Peter but ran into Mark, Sam, and some other folks.

Peter did mention to get our butts to the OGR meeting on Friday which was great. I had a blast just for that alone.

Meeting people wasn't easy in 2017 as I was overwhelmed like most are on the first time, but I did manage to make some great conversation with those I did including Roger and Dorcie of TWTrainworx.

October 2018 was great for socializing as I met more people at Quaker Steak dinner that Peter introduced me to including Don, GRJ, Traindiesel(Bryan), LocoLawyer(Erol) and others. 

Last October was much of the same with socializing as well. A group of us had met at the Olive Garden Friday night and pretty much closed the place. We had also done Quaker Steak prior which was great as well.

A few things that I sort of kick myself from 2019 though we're not saying hi to Skip while we were in line at Strasburg waiting for our 611 experiences. Skip had the cab your where I just had whistle blowing. Met Superwarp in line there as well, we talked a bit.

The other kick was at the NJ Hirailers where I saw Mel in line getting food but missed him passing me somehow. Mel, sorry I didn't get a chance to talk to you, would have enjoyed talking for sure. I think my mind was blown that day.

One of the other great things I have enjoyed at York has been chatting with the OGR staff. Having been lucky to talk with Rich a bit that first year, and Allan, Alan, Ed and Jim since it has always been fun.

It is interesting to see what will be coming our way. I know a lot of changes for me are coming, hopefully some great things come out of stuff for me, I guess we shall see. I know I got great ideas I am brewing, and really want things to progress and become just more than an idea. I'll be asking some friends some questions in the coming weeks if I get moving on things.

Dave, I remember we both attended our first York that fall.  It was great to meet you and so many others I had never met from the Forum!!!!!

Yeah, I think one of the great things was seeing Allan and Alan at breakfast.it is hard for them to have time to do anything as both can attest. We teased Alan that he used up all the maple syrup in 2018 which wasn't true, we put a huge dent in it before it got over to him, lol.

I've never counted or kept track of how many York shows I've been to.  

I guess the only one that really matters is the "next" one.

I'm counting the days. Stuff seems to go very fast here at work, hard keeping my head tied down lately. I miss seeing the folks I buy stuff from and talking to them. I actually missed Mike Reagan my first time out but got to talk a lot with him the next time. I really need to snap more photos each time I go. I know last year was dominated by 611 and the NJ Hirailers. There was hardly any York pics.

Too early to try to book hotel for Oct 2021 - I looked last night...
