York Survival Kit

A rain jacket/suit is good, 2 of the 4 Yorks i have seen to have seen huge rains.

Besides a list I find it good to have images on my iPhone of the items I am looking for. Sometimes things run together and I have to double check so I buy the correct item

Business card, even if it is just a personnel one, help if you want to stay in contact with a seller

All of the above, plus:

*Advil (For aching feet, knees, hips, back, etc. if needed.)

*Cooler with drinks/snacks for refreshment between trips back & forth to the car.

*Hotel confirmation info

*Check book (for those table holders who don't take credit cards)

*Some cash on the side for gas for the trip home!

All good suggestions so far.

I'd add a few empty boxes of various sizes depending on your intended purchases.  Helps keep the car trunk organized a little and it's easier to put a bunch of small items (catalogs, DVDs, smoke fluid, some single pieces of rolling stock, etc) in a box and shufle that around as you buy other things later.  Of course your personal preference (and area you have for storage in the car/truck/etc) may vary on this one.

Oh, and on the rain side of things, I take an umbrella for myself.

A pen and something to scribble on.

One of those reuseable grocery bags - good for carrying purchases around before getting them back to the car.

If you use a guide you are probably overpaying. Research the price on eBay.

Oh do not forget meds in a convenient way to carry them, plus a med alert bracelet or similar

1. Maps of halls that are posted on TCA's ED web site - can establish a shopping/looking strategy
2. LL Bean boat bag (folded) to carry stuff around
3. Batteries for my cell phone, camera and walkie-talkie use. 
4. Excedrin Migraine. 
5. Patience
6. Tablet and pen - to make notes.
7. An overall plan that outlines things like: only spending $X; setting priorities for items on the shopping list

Hooters on rte 30 is no longer in business. Chapter 11. Headquarters wanted to keep the york hooters open but $150,000 had to be paid to the state I believe. Not sure who the money is owed to ,positive about the amount.

Hold on just a minute here. Change for the bathroom? It has been ages since I've been to York. Either I forgot or they were free back then. Or they have vending machines in there. Good to know, I suppose.

Probably started around the turn of the century plus/minus a couple years.  No vending machines, but tips encouraged.  Can be a touchy subject form both sides.

Tips? Are these pay toilets, or tips for those who keep it clean? I can see that. Oh horrors, there isn't a valet in there, is there?

I really must sit down with local friends who regularly visit York and have a chat. York can be an overwhelming experience. I need to get out there again before I get too old.

You read some of the stuff in this thread (and others) and it just confirms how the time-worn stereotype of model railroaders being a bunch of very "interesting" characters came to be. 

one to add, but this is probably unique to a very few, but I'm one of that 'few': my reading glasses.

Pretty tough to scour thru all those boxes that are laying 'sideways' where the window isn't visible without being able to read the label.

If you mean the old Lone Star, it's good to see that vacant spot finally filled with something good (not that I'm likely to visit Chik-Fil-A for dinner while at York, but I know lots of people are quite fond of it).

Chick-fil-A is fine for a lunchtime sandwich (good cole slaw, too), but it darn sure ain't no Hooters!  

Hand sanitizer.  You never know what else that hand has been shaking that you just shook.

An extra jacket or warm coat for the Grand Stand meeting. It is often cold and windy there even if it doesn't seem so other places.

I just put 2 in my trunk after reading your comment.  I did one other small thing though (since I had them on hand): I attached a couple pieces of self adhesive velcro on the bottom of each so they don't slide around and dump their contents.  Might be unnecessary but ....

Make up your mind you are going to York to have a good time not only to look at amazing trains but perhaps bringing back a prize purchase.  In other words dont let the basterds wear you down.  Lets be honest,your there to buy at the lowest negotiated price and the opposition is there to sell at the highest price. Practice those negotiating skills.  Buy at your price or walk away from it.  Lets have more of "The thrill of victory and less of "The agony of defeat".
