Today Is National Lionel Train Day!

I am creating a separate thread for a live O gauge forum feed and twitter feed for everyone to ask Mike Reagan (Director of Project Management and Customer Service) At Lionel any questions you may have.  I know a lot of people can't come to New York so this is a great opportunity to access one of Lionel's most talented representatives.  Use #StumpReagan if your asking on twitter!  We will do our best to answer most of your questions throughout the day but it is going to be very very busy.

Here are a few good questions:

1.   Do you have any plans for a Lionel 20th century limited Dreyfuss Hudson with Legacy?

2. Do you have any plans for a Lionel New York Central Niagara with Legacy?

3. Could you set up a way for consumers to submit product ideas to Lionel? (I have some.)

4. Do you anticipate putting Lionchief plus in SCALE locomotives?

Thank you for your time,

Nickstrains.

Q Is there a LionChief Plus GG1 in the future??
A. Can't answer any future product questions, unfortunately you will have to wait for the catalogs to come out!

Q. Whose is your favorite customer living on Lindy Drive in Carmel, New York ?
A. Do you mean which customer in Carmel New York has the largest number of operator errors? lol Elliot Scherr of course!

Q. Did you ever find a top for our clubs Scrambler Ride?
A. That all depends, I dont currently have choochoopaul in my system so I cant answer that question.

Q. Why can't you stock parts for more than just a couple years? Mt Clemens Lionel could repair trains that were 50, 60, 70, years old. Yes I know many parts today are not compatible, but why can't they be?
A.  We currently have over 140,000 individual parts in stock and displayed online 24/7 365 days a year.  With individual photos of every single one.

Q. What is being done to increase the quality and reliability of new delivered products.
A. Every single product produced in every single factory is tested prior to packaging. Lionel has 3 US citizens who spend 11 months out of the year living in China for manufacturing support and quality assurance roles.  Can you give me an example of what new products your referring to and what the failures your seeing are?

Q. Will we see any matching cars to the Silver Berk or any additional cars for the Gold Berk?
A. Can't answer any future product questions, unfortunately you will have to wait for the catalogs to come out!

Q. I understand the UK Lionel dealership has been sold. The word is the new owners will not be repairing Legacy or TMCC engines unless sold by them. Will this mean for all repairs of Legacy/TMCC in the UK the equipment must be returned to the USA?
A. Contact me at mreagan@lionel.com I have a very talented repair person in Europe I can connect you with.

Q. Will we be seeing any 40’ & 50’ Pullman Standard PS1 combination door box cars equipped with a 10' sliding main door and 6' plug door in the future?
A. Can't answer any future product questions, unfortunately you will have to wait for the catalogs to come out!

Q. Speaking of the Lionel parts web site: How about an option to only return listing of parts that are  available directly from Lionel?
A. To be honest, we need to do things that may not cater to your specific likings, but caters to the "overall majority". While this function may be an annoyance to you it useful for others. We do our best to accommodate folks as best we can. Sorry you are not a fan of this function.

Q. Will we see a new Mi-Jack crane that will unload the Lionel doublestack cars, soon?  LOCOMOTION
A. STILL can't answer any future product questions, unfortunately you will have to wait for the catalogs to come out!

Q: Trains A and B are traveling in the same direction on parallel tracks. Train A is traveling at 60 mph and train B is traveling at 70 mph. Train A passesa station at 12:20 P.M. If train B passes the same station at 12:32 P.M., at what time will train B catch up to train A?

A: Train B will catch train A at precisely 1:44pm.

Nice try Derek!

Just purchased the 6-37006 VISIONLINE flatcar with LC D billboard and having trouble loading video file on it according to the info given in the owner's manual. Granted it's an item with older software I'm talking about but it's still being sold new by some dealers with no warnings from Lionel ablout them being unable to help consumers with issues they might have with it. I'm uncertain if my problem arises from a compatibility issue with Win 8 and Win 10 I'm  running or if the software on the Lionel SD card that came with the billboard was corrupted when purchased. Irregardless, an archival search of Lionel's website revealed no info or links to the software programs on that SD card. A call to customer service was likewise fruitless since the customer service rep. knew nothing about the software and no techs there were able to offer assistance as none had knowledge of the particular software associated with that lcd billboard. Why doesn't Lionel provide a link to that software or possible upgrades of it for those whose Lionel SD card may be corrupted or for other reasons is non functioning? Very frustrating situation, Mike. Where can I turn for help???

Let's be frank. The billboard shipped on the flat 7 years ago. Technology has vastly evolved since that time. I would recommend setting the image format to something compatible with Windows XP (you will have to forgive me, I make trains and not a super savvy computer anything guru). If memory serves me correctly the billboard uses a standard SD card to read photos from. The SD card it came with was a super small storage capacity, so any SD card with files saved to an older format (I am thinking smaller pixel count has something to do with the file extension). I can check my parts inventory on Monday and see if we have any of those SD cards or even billboards that I could perhaps send your way. Shoot me a private email at mreagan@lionel.com with a reminder and I'll see what I can do to help you out.

Thanks,

Mike

Mike, another question, this about my new FlyerChief Polar Express set Berk. Great set but smoke unit was DOA upon arrival and upon contacting customer service they took care of my problem in a very speedy and satisfactory fashion replacing the smoke unit and I'mvery happy with the service Lionel gave. However, my question is, at slow speeds if smokes like a chimney but at higher running speeds the appearance of smoke from the smokestack diminishes considerably. Why does this happen since there's a constant 18 volts being applied regardless of the speed? Btw, I'm using Lionel's Premium smoke fluid and the original power supply included with the set has been replaced with your more powerful 4 amp , 70 something watt wall wart.

Also, why did Lionel resort to using a type of glue to affix the passenger car light wires to the copper contact strips rubbing the wheel axles rather than soldering the wires? Myself and some other folks with this set have experienced fluttering light problems due to loose wire contacts on the cars the longer they're run. A great engine and superb looking passenger cars but lighting tends to be problematic.

A comment & question for Mike. With all the excellent technolgy that has gone into the legacy system over the past few years and all of the great scale locomotives & rolling stock I feel that one thing that has been overlooked by Lionel are the acceories that compliment the operation of the railroad. That being crossing signals, crossing gates and a signaling system that are in scale size and operate in the same protyipical manner that our trains operate at. With the devolopment of the I Pad technology for operating our trains will Lionel offer such trackside accessories that add to that level of realistic operation?

Mike, I'm a great fan of Lionel, you and your products are responsible for saving what little sanity I posses.  What, however, possessed "you" to change the design of the freight trucks?  The new design is very pleasing, aesthetically, and the coupler release mechanism ("the pin") is great but once you get into the guts all you find is cheap stampings and little brass rivets - the worst is the bolster.  I like to run trains that have weight to them and have the truck springs actually perform their design function but these delicate little things are better suited to Mag-Lev.  Also, I was very disappointed (really frustrated) to learn that the screws attaching the side frames to the "bolster" are a mix-match affair.  A pair of trucks from my new cattle car had two different screw and thread types in the same truck; I "assumed" they were the same and wound up cross threading.  Your product quality is swell, generally, but few exceptions are egregious.

Thank you for subjecting yourself to this barrage, you deserve a raise if not sainthood.

Some of us thought this before Mike enlisted or was drafted for this tour of duty. Anyway now that he's here:

1.  When are the new 21" Station Sounds diners shipping? They have not been in the online shipping schedule for quite a while.

2.  The new Legacy crane and boom cars are in the schedule but are they really shipping five months apart? The schedule says boom cars next month, cranes May 2016.
