I have an MTH Z-4000 transformer with the remote control handheld unit.  The receiver is plugged into the back of the transformer.  The front of the receiver has a 9 pin receptacle that is not used.  Does anyone know what is used for?  There is nothing in the instruction manual about it.

Okay, let me back up.  The Mike's Train House Z-4000 with wireless remote box plugged in and used with Remote was MTH's first wireless remote system for running conventionally (controlling track voltage).  The DB-9 socket was probably installed for future upgrades or connection to future systems.

Forward to Protosound 2 and the MTH Digital Command System (DCS).  The DCS Remote Control Set with the Track Interface Unit (TIU) and DCS Remote can replace the Z-4000 remote box and remote.  The first Track Interface Units (TIUs) also have the DB-9 socket that is used for TIU software changes and connecting to Lionel's TMCC/Legacy remote systems.  In the newer TIUs a USB socket has replaced the DB-9 socket.

Not exactly.

The Rev. L TIU has a USB port in addition to the RS-232 serial port.

This and a whole lot more is all in MTH’s “The DCS O Gauge Companion 2nd Edition", available for purchase as an eBook or a printed book at MTH's web store!

Barry, thanks for the correction!
