Do BOTH of these transformers have a chopped sinewave output and is it gradually smoothed out over the course of the voltage increase? I operate the Z4000 with Lionel TMCC and Legacy locos. I operate both P2 and P3 MTH locos.

Of the two, only the Z4000 simulates a sine wave.
Which of the two would operate an open-frame 3-pole AC motor smoother?
Probably a Z4000 if I had to guess.
Here's some Z1000 waveforms at various throttle settings and power loading.
Here are some Z4000 waveforms the same kind of tests, these are with an 8 amp load.
Here's the Z4000 unloaded half throttle and full throttle.

Art,
It's not the Z1000 that creates the problem, rather, it's the Z-Controller.
THANKS for the info! I have noticed my 2-390E runs smoother on my Z4000 than the 1000. I use the 1000 brick with a DCS Commander for my P2 & P3 engines and the DCS is smooth. Since I have 3 loops I will have to break out my second Z4000 and ditch the Z Controller.
