Hi,

I’m new to the forum, I have been slowing getting all of the locomotives that my dad had when I was growing up. And have been having some issues with the horn on the 2353 dummy. All of the wiring to the front truck and pick up was either broken or missing.  I found the wiring schematic in the Olsen Train library and rewired the dummy to match. The horn works however when I put it in my Christmas layout and tried the horn it worked but pulled the e-unit on the locomotive and burned out the coil windings. A little info on my small layout, it is a 4x4 rounded square. I was using a Marx 90w transformer, but after checking the 1033 out and cleaning it up, I’m using 18 gauge solid wire to connect to the track. Any thoughts or hints would be awesome.

It sounds like the wiring is suspect.

The 'E' unit is always energized when the loco is powered up, but the coil should never burn out as it is designed to be constantly powered unless you lock it out.

Blowing the horn should not affect the 'E' unit, unless you press the horn button very slowly. There may be a very slight dead spot in the horn switch mechanism as the lever moves through it's full travel which may cause the 'E' unit to sequence if it is in the 'on' position.

To counter this, just press the horn button down quickly and/or lockout the 'E' unit.

Thank you Larry,

I have the horn wired to the front pickup with the light. Sound like it might be in the transformer as well. When the 2353 AA set was running years ago (Early 70’s) it was run with a ZW, however it is on the list of thing I need to repair. The 1033 was in a set that my Dad picked up as a second hand store. The voltage look good across the different post, but the whistle side may need a deeper look, and it seemed to cycle the e-unit coil when applied.
