IMG_2969IMG_2970IMG_2971IMG_2966IMG_2967IMG_2968I was just boxing up books at my parents' house when I came across one of my most favorite books as a kid. "Great Toy Train Layouts of America" by McComas and Tuohy. Of course my project came to a grinding halt as I looked at all of the amazing layouts in the book. Then I noticed that it was published in September 1987. Happy birthday!! It's wild to think how much progress has been made on the hi rail scenery since then.

As kids we were fortunate to be able to buy these books directly from the author Tom McComas since he had a sales table at the Great Midwest Train Show in Wheaton, IL. Fun memories!!

YEs! I got that book the videos[ sold them off] and still have the DVD! But I always wondered what happened to this layout...

A great scale layout but so few pictures in the book and non existent in the video/DVD!

Also is Stan Roy still running his automated layout? IF so, how many levels and trains?

and what happened to the Dentist Michael Primack?

It's also sad to see some of those names and layouts that have departed too!

To answer your question:

That layout has been disassembled.  It was at Bill Taylor's home and was disassembled when his mother died and the siblings wanted desperately to sell the house.

I believe that layout was the beginning of what we now call 3 rail scale.

On the personal side:

I saw a picture of the layout in the LCCA magazine with a street address.  I dropped the guys a note (no phone number and certainly no email address) saying I'd like to visit and received a cordial invitation.  Besides the layout, the room was full of Bill's excellent framed railroad photographs (his profession).  I visited quite a few times and brought Right of Way prototypes to see if they would run on Super O (the PRR T1 was a definite no). We had an interesting conversation at York when my wife asked Bill about the dragon pin he was wearing.   It was a South Vietnamese Army award for his work in military intelligence.  Side note:  Bill was Army intel, Jim from Trading Post in Cleveland was Navy intel and I was Air Force intel.  Sadly Bill passed away a few years ago.  I still visit with his cousin Ron Davis at the local TCA meets.

Probably more than you wanted to know.

Thanks Lou! That is a great story. I spent a lot of time studying the photos of that layout to get ideas to make mine better detailed.

Next time you see Ron tell him thanks for the inspiration!!!
