3R wheel flange depth

I have a Lionel 4-4-2 steam loco. The rear trailing truck appears to have a pretty deep flange, I hear a clicking noise on my atlas track especially around curves. Thinking it may be caused by the flange. There was a thread a while back about one model that had trouble in switches and some folks were able to grind down the wheels a bit to solve this problem. Is this possible and what tool would anyone suggest for a do it at home job. thanks

It may be easier to locate a different set of wheels and axle to replace.

You may also want to check the wheel guage. May be too wide or narrow causing jumps on the turnout.
