When I run my new to me 3rd rail gtw 4-8-4 it will go around the o72 loop in reverse perfect but when in forward it comes to a stop every so often and then accelerates up again and does this over and over. any help on this would be appreciated, and thanks in advance for advice.

I would suggest pulling the shell off the engine and make sure the speed sensor is centered over the tach strip and within .020" of the surface. If there is any thrust movement of the armature shaft it may move it out of spec from the sensor when you change direction.

Does the 3rd Rail TMCC use Odyssey? I was under the impression they used the ERR stuff nowadays, but I don't actually have a TMCC equipped one to check. I believe they say ERR Cruise Control, no tach strip to check.
3rd Rail has been using ERR for about three years now. Earlier TMCC offerings have TAS EOB or TAS pre EOB without cruise.
